Default Rebuilding Y1 cable transmission

Good day, knowledgable US Americans.

I'm feeling a bit greedy, and rather than just replace a few synchros and bearings in my dying gearbox, I am investigating the idea of swapping a few gears around to get a closer ratio.

A vague mechanic in my area said he can use D series gears to rebuild the box to better suit the powerband of the engine and the intended purpose of the vehicle - which is mostly under 160kmph tarmac rally, hill climb and other point to points around twisty roads with a bit of circuiting on the side.

I can't seem to get a technical explanation from this mechanic as to how this is possible and what exactly needs to be done. ie does he need to use ALL D series gears, synchros and bearings to do this. What can he mix and match? Is the whole idea worthwhile? ie would the box be durable for my power output of an eventual 130kw atw

Cheers

Try looking up "Bense" on this site. He is the most knowledgable person on what interchanges on D series transmissions. (he REALLY needs to get a live)
