[B]Sting puts the brakes on illegal racers
Cars impounded for unlawful modifications[B]
By Dan Abendschein Staff Writer
WALNUT - Police targeted street racers Tuesday, issuing over 100 citations.
West Covina Police Department along with officers from Azusa, Baldwin Park, were part of the Walnut operation.
West Covina also requested assistance from Irwindale, which has officers trained in spotting illegal engine modifications, according to Irwindale Sgt. Mario Camacho.
The police impounded seven cars, made two arrests on outstanding warrants, and one arrest for driving under the influence, police said.
A car social group called Take A Break Tuesday meets every week at the Amar and Nogales intersection in Walnut, Camacho said.
"The majority are not actually racing, but are congregating and watching," said Camacho.
The group's MySpace page describes the event as an "organized carmeet," and says TAB Tuesdays have been going on since December of 2004.
This is the second straight week that police have shown up to watch the group.
Last Tuesday the police made two arrests for illegal racing, but this week none.
"My feelings are that it is because of the heavy presence of police, that they are not racing anymore," said Camacho.
Last week, police wrote about
50 citations and impounded about four cars, according to West Covina police Lt. Pete Mena.
Some of the racing goes through West Covina, Mena said.
The Amar and Nogales intersection is just outside of West Covina.
Most of the citations were for modified exhaust systems and nitrous tanks, which enable vehicles to drive faster, according to Sgt. Camacho.
The police asked group members to open their hoods, claiming probable cause of criminal activity, so they could inspect the engines for illegal modifications.
The citations are mostly correctable, so if violators remove the illegal modifications they will not be fined, authorities said.
The West Covina Police Department plans to continue to show up at TAB Tuesdays.
"It is going to continue, and we are going to continue hitting them until they curb their illegal behavior," said Mena.

What meet isn't underground, since when is it illegal to meet and check some cars out?I understand the street race's being busted, but to bust a car meet that's just bs unless there actually meeting up to street race then i would understand that.

cops did the same bust a couple months back in riverside too. I was there...nobody did anything that night. NO street racing (well at least not yet) everybody was chilling in the parking lot and out of no where cops pop up. I understand if you street race, but if your just chilling there doing nothing but talking with friends and get asked to pop your hood...come on. I know theres laws blah blah blah but we have rights too.
Ummm, Do you all know your constitutional rights? You could have told those cops to SUCK YOU OFF. If they did not pull you over for speeding or racing they have NO RIGHT to search your vehicle. Just politely say, "Do you have a warrant?" If they say, "No," you say "Am I free to go?" If they refuse call a lawyer and you are on the way to a pay day!

exactly... cops will say anything to bust someone... they cant just search something on a whim.... ive herd DUI checks are constitutionaly illegal cause they are searching / checking people without reasonable cause.
unless they see you racing then keep the hood latched.

Except the you're on private property, and congregated, if the police can hold you over for loitering and tresspassing, they're gonna look into the car too. Jesus.

DUI checks in my state are actually seatbelt checks which are legal, the smell of alcohol gives probable cause for a sobriety test.

Thank you, when you are on private property (trespassing) and hanging out (loitering) they can ask you questions and search through your stuff if they feel they need to. In normal situations, say like a traffic stop, they ask you if they can look around in your vehicle without spotting something (say a pipe or baggies) you can tell them no and they will have to obey. But if they spot something or smell something, they are gonna have a look.

Ah this reminds me of one encounter I had.
Sorry, OT:
I have literally had a cop (training officer, specifically) poke his head into my buddy's window, say "I smell cannabis, why do I smell cannabis?" and still not have anything done to us.
We were just blazing, so it was a little crazy at the time. He then asked if he could search the car. My buddy never said no, but he never said yes either and the cop didn't search the car.
craziness... I thought we were screwed

fyi......... heres the proper procedure in the event of a search.
officer: may i search your car?
you: no sir, i do not consent to a search.
officer: why?
you: because i believe its in my consitutional rights, and i do not consent to a search.
thats the only way to avoid a search without a warrant. anything else is suspisious, or whats the word im looking for....... forgot. but it gives them a reason to search your car. if they search it anyways after wht i told you....... its an illegal search, bottom line.

The great state of south carolina does not have any emissions tests or vehicle inspections. I love this place. Rednecks drive there Z71's with glasspacks and everyone takes off there cats.
