Default header maintenance

ive been looking into the 'best header' post and rather than jack it, i figured id start a new one. is there anything you can do to prevent headers from rusting or burning up and changing colors? does header wrap help at all? maybe keeping it really clean? my friend paid around 300 for a ceramic dc and it is rusty at the welds. hes had it for about a year... just wondering if theres any maintenance you can do to make the finish and materials last longer

nope....header rap may help prevent rust just cause it wont let anything drip on it....but no matter what when a header gets hot its gonna change the color of it always....

header wrap doent prevent rust ,it make theing worse since you install in wet ,header wrap sucks all it does is kill the header ,Sure it helps with heat under the hod ,but dont think its worth it when its eating away at your header

what i would do is take the header off ,sandblast around the welds (you can pick up a hobby sandblaster for 20 bucks at any hardware store) blast all the welds and whatever else on it thats rusting and just get some high heat paint and call it a day

yeah, most of the time header wrap just serves to trap moisture and further corrode the header. Friends have had good luck with wirebrushing and using the hi-temp "engine-block" paint. You can even get it to match how it looked before. header wrap could be applied after that, but you risk rusting. Only way to prevent header wrap from causing further damage is by coating it. They make a spray coating you can get from summitracing.com that basically seals the pores on the wrap so they won't let water in.

here's a decent pic and explaination: http://www.1tail.com/sa/p/Exha...g.htm

you could always have it re-coated with a functional coating, like this
http://www.swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10969

a friend did it to the exhaust manifolds and hot side of his turbos on his VR-4 and said it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. swain is backed by a lot of science and racing research.
