Default honda trick?

in the owner's manual of honda it says "honda anti-freeze/coolant is not available, you may use another major-brand as a temporary replacement.Continued use of non-honda coolant can result in corrosion and possible cooling system malfunction. Have the cooling system flushed and refilled with honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as possible." Is this a trick to scare people into going to the dealership to serivce the car and possibly spend more money than just going to an auto shop or walmart to buy your own antifreeze and fill it up yourself? doing it yourself can save money. anybody know if its true?

Just like Honda's MTF/ATF, their coolant is a 'unique formula' that is dealer-specific. It lasts longer and prevents corrosion better than something like prestone would. When I was at Honda we sold a GRIP of Honda Type 2 coolant to local shop's because they knew its worth it and not just some gimmicky bullshit.

Its really not any more expensive than other anti-freeze -- Just get the OE stuff.
