The speedo stopped working and I have a CEL. I can only assume it's something to do with the speed sensor.

What causes this to malfunction?

 

Yep, the CEL and speedo not working means bad VSS

~100 from Honda
~30 from ebay
~10 from junkyard

Np, I had a similar problem but mine was the cluster dead, not the VSS.

Just remove the air intake and you should be able to reach it with a ratchet + extensions
