Weird noise, only when cold water pump? oil pump?
So, Im not sure when the noise started, but I didnt pay mutch attention to it as it did it a little whent he car is completely warm, then go away.
Now, I did an oil change, and the noise is more pronounced, louder and last a little longer but STILL GOES AWAY after the car is warmed up...
Let me try to explain how the noise is
Well, its coming from the timing belt AREA, its like a gear grinding kinda sound, happens for a sec, then goes away then goes away after the car is warmed.
Now, I though it could be 1 of 2 things, Power steering, I was having power steering wining noise
or 2 alternator
so I tested both, I unbolted power steering ( well I took off the belt)
AND did 2 things to the alternator, first I put another alternator on, then I unhooked the belt
Noise is still there.....
SO, im leaning more towards timing components, mabey the water pump?
Reason why I say water pump, I looked at mny Radiator cap, and there is BROWN sludge built up on the cap ( I know Im a slacker I didnt do a coolant flush since I bought the car) and the previous owner probably didnt do a coolant flush.....
OR, one friend said it may be in the head, like its the #1 cylinder, the one closes to the timing belt.....
So, you guys input ur thoughts here, imma do a coolant flush, and see how she reacts
Might I say, I DONT loose coolant, AND I NEVER OVERHEAT, temp gauge sits at below middle ( im guessing 180* thermo)
** UPDATE***
So, I did a COMPLETE coolant flush, and refilled with fresh coolant, and still I get the noise.
Next day I buy some LUCAS oil stablizer, put 1/2 mabey 3/4 of the bottle in the motor oil, and, let the car get completely COLD again, NO NOISE AT ALL!! Noise is gone!!
I pulled the valve cover before I added the stablizer, and I didnt see anything wrong with the head, it looked coated well with oil etc.. no scratches or anything...
So, we now have concluded this is something internal motor ( i assumed it might have been the timing beklt tentioner too.... guess not
So, I dunno I guess I have to check oil pressure next, no someone tell me, what should a d15B vtec motor be with oil pressure? what is the correct or safest oil pressure for this motor????

i would lean to the oil pump. i had one do this in a b16 i had and about 2 days later the oil pump gear blew up! there where about 10 peices when i opened the casing up.
not to be a dick but maybe thats why you are having this problem? but so did mine until the noise went away. lol and my oil light came on.
thats what hondas are for
Anyway, if it is in fact il problem, ill put on a gauge and see what she reads....
I dont think thats the problem though.

well its an idea. get a long hallow rod and put it up against the block where you think the noise is coming from put your ear to the rod and it will give you a very good idea what it is. oh and it needs to be running. lol
does the brown stuff look like chocolate pudding? also how did the oil look when you drained it?
unless someone put a real crappy cheap water pump on it or it has 400k miles on it, the water pumps just don't fail much.
can't really guess you problem from a discription of the noise. check some things out and see if you can find anything else thats not quite right.

tru I agree,
Lets see,
oil looked fine, black as usual.
gunk looked like corrosion build up, like brown stuff, i dunno...
The water pump cant be that old, I mean, its a JDM motor, motor probbaly doesnt even have 50,000 miles on it.
Anyway, im thinking it "MAY" be valve train, mabey a spring or something....
cuz i do loose a little oil. depending on how bad i beat on the car...
My car does kinda smoke when in vtec.... or on it hard...

I think I may have traced the noise to the head.....
What could it be in the head? Its right by the timing belt #1 cylinder..... mabey a cam journal bearing??

aight guys, I foregot to add, theres more to the story than I wrote.
So
#1, my car doesnt have a rev limiter, I dunno why, its ythe STOCK p28 that came with my car(d16z6)
The ecu is retarted, itll rev to 9K
Anyway, YEs, I have reved it ALOT past 7K, a littler after 8K sometimes..
With this in mind, this leads me to think the CAM Journal Bearing(s) are gouged up.......
So, i say ok, cool all i have to replace is the bearing, but to thinl of it, it may have gouged up the cam too, so I may want to replace both the cam AND the bearing(s)
Am I making sence??

little update, I did a Complete motor coolant flush, and gfilled with fresh coolant/water.
Noise still there, SO.. I bought some Lucas oil stablizer, put it in, and first I only put a little bit, like less than 1/4 of the bottle, noise still there. Put 3/4 of the bottle in, and guess what, NOISE IS GONE! Car was complely COLD I started it up, and NO NOISE!
What ya think??

well, I guess the noise is back again, the lucas only stopped it for a day...
C'mon peeps, I mean, what are symtoms of timing tentioners going out? I dont over heat, why would it be water pump? And car drives way too damn good to be oil pump, I dunno man, im lost.
I dont wanan do a oil pump if I dont have to.

if you were an animal what would you be to describe the noise it makes? you are not clear enough on the noise...
whats the mileage on ur car?
whats the mileage on ur car?
mileage on the car is 74,000 miles on the motor is NOT even 50,000 miles mabey 4500
this noise, damn, its like, a ****, I dunno man All I know its coming from timing belt area, EVERYONE swore it was the alternator, I not only put in a new alternaltr, but a new belt, and I even unhooked the damn alternator, Noise is still there......
lets see, the noise, mabey sounds like rollerblades, but the bearings are SHOT, like a gear grinding noise...... Damn I dunno how to describe the noise.
The noise doesnt keep going when I rev the motor, its almost like a power steering whine type noise when I rev it up though ( power steering is unhooked and diabled)!!
I mean **** the car runs good, BUT, I need to fix something obviously.....

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeee?? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr? wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooo?
constant? or intermitent? gets louder as rpm increases? is this noise even loud? audible inside/outside both? are you a picky person?

you know what? take off ur accessory belts. noise still there? oil pumps rarely fail....its in an oil bath....
if it is get a long screw driver or extension or something (stethoscope) and put it up around the timing cover and listen through the other end...where is it loudest?

ok, start car, dont hear the noise, after a second, youll hear the noise, almost like a really bad power steering whine, but worse, it IS loud, you can hear it, then itll go away, then itll come back, on and off. After the car is WARMED up, or after I have taken it for a drive, I stop, get out of the car with it still running and listen for a minut, and NO, no more noise......
The noise turnes from the grinding type noise, to a power steering whine type noise when I rev the car up.

BTW, I have teaken off ALL 3 belts, started the car, and the noise is still there, thats why I have concluded #1 water pump ( but I dont over heat) #2 oil pump ( i refuse its that, car runs too damn good) #3 timing belt tentioner OR #4 a valve, or spring or cam journal bearing in the head
alirght, sound like top end noise or bottom end? and you're sure its the timing belt area? if so take ur t belt off spin each bearing by hand and feel/listen for play/noise/roughness, should spin freely
Damn, I just need to stop being lazy and put an oil pressure gauge on it, that willt ell us what the deal is, or narrow our search,.....
I juts dont have the socket to get the oil swithc off, is there anywhere else on the single slam to tap into for oil pressure ?

oil light is NOT on, and never goes on (while driving or whatever)
And come to think of it, I said the noise got louder or more pronounced after I did the oil change, BUT, I foregot, at thje same time of the oil change, I cleaned my engine bay. My upper timing belt cover is off ( no not to be cool, the previous owner had it off and I just never put it back on)
SO, im curious, mabey the WATER, degreaser, rusted up the tentioner or one of them pulleys???? Good though..... I guess....
