Default Turbo ZC or bigger engine?

A friend of mine wants more out of his 89 Hatch SI. He currently has a ZC swap with I/H/E and wants more. He currently has a 1st gen Eclipse turbo that's been rebuilt so he's thinking of putting it on. What all would be needed on a cheap setup and what all would be needed on a proper setup. Cheap I mean like 4lbs. of boost and doing very little as possible proper 10lbs. at the max. He's also got an IC from a saab that should work fine fits in the fender well decent. So he'll need injectors (integra GSR will work?), computer reprogrammed or a fuel computer, boost controller if it didn't come with the fuel computer, custom made IC hoses, custom down pipe and turbo manifold. Does anybody make a turbo manifold for the ZC or can one be adapted. After this is done and he's dished out probably over 2K would it be better to just drop it a B16/18 or maybe a CRVTEC. I think he wants turbo so he can keep his decent gearing on the highway. I'd like to see him do a CRVTEC personally as it's probably more reliable and easier to do than turbo. What do you guys think and any recommendations on fuel computers or getting this thing reprogrammed.

I am in the process of turboing my ZC I ca nlet you know how it goes. As for the manifold, Greddy 92-95 SOHC manifold was originally made for ZCs. They are two slight mods to make the fit again...you have to shave the bottom corners like 1mm and enlarge the ports. Greddy says you don't have to enlarge the ports until you boost over 7psi. How much do those other swaps cost? They gotta be more than 2000....plus at 10psi he should around 160-170 at wheels (quote from someone else dunno how true (yet!))

For 2000, he should be able to drop a complete Greddy kit in there. He could sell his mitsu turbo to recover losses on the Greddy kit.

I think GSR injectors are the same flow as the civic injectors, so there is really no reason to switch. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I recently did a Greddy kit on my ZC. I'm using a starion intercooler, but otherwise the kit is pretty much how it came from Greddy. The bad news is that the kit now comes with a fuel modification computer instead of the FMU. That may or may not be good news for the 92 and up cars, but its bad news for 4th generation owners with ZCs, or A6's. The computer has to be ditched, sold, or put on a shelf and replaced with a FMU (or Zdyne type stand alone which would skyrocket the cost of a cheap project).

Personally I went with the ZC/Turbo instead of a B16 for a few reasons. The main reason was that I already had the motor and I love how it drives. Its so much more fun than an A6, but its still a cheap D series motor which brings me to the second reason. I like to run my car with no worries about breaking something. I know that D series trannies are a dime a dozen and can be swapped rather quickly. If I break a tranny, I have extras at home from years of buying parts cars, etc. If I blow the motor up, I know a ZC is only about $500 away which is really no big deal. If I break a distributer (which seems to happen most often out of anything on a ZC), I just head to the junkyard with $50 in hand. Parts are easily obtained for the most part, and they're often cheap. Its easier to rag on something with confidence when you aren't worried about replacing it. Over all, for $2000, the ZC will be faster than a stock or near stock B16. A ZC turbo should get you mid to low 14s with very little work. Now add a turbo to the B16 and its a different story.

alls I can say is http://www.homemadeturbo.com Jeff(AKA Abaz) is a whiz when it come to D-series, boneyard turbo setups. I'm not sure he's went over 2K on any of his setups. Well aside from the built ZC he's running now, but hey it's built

Personally since he's got the turbo already it's won't be the hard, the 14B is a good turbo for the D series. Anyways here is a decent break down of the best way you could do it, tho it won't be the cheapest. YOu shouldn't blow your engine up doing it this way,

*14B turbo* - Free
*Turbo manifold* - ported HF exhaust manifold ~ $20
*Adapter Plate* for manifold to turbo ~ $30
*Fuel/spark management* - Zdyne SECU gold ~ $900
*Downpipe* - 100 bucks or so at a decent exhaust shop.
*I/C* - Free
*I/C piping* ~ $100-$200 depending on routing a labor. You could buy a few U and J bends and do it yourself if you have access to a welder.
*450cc mistu injectors* $50 or so
*1G Mistu BOV* $25-50 ?

So for at most $1500, you could have a nice little junk yard turbo setup

Anyways, visit that site it's got better details than I can provide. He's a nice guy and pretty helpful i'm sure he wouldn't mind an e-mail.

for a junkyard turbo setup I don't see a problem with the HF manifold but for anything of real performance I just can't imagine it. That things so damn restrictive. If I was turboing a D15 or maybe a stock SI engine maybe but for the ZC I can't see it. As for going with a different engine I figured CRV engine for $900 a B16 head for a few hundred the Bseries mount kit and the ECU reprogrammed plus I/H that's about $2200 and CRVTEC is supposed to be good for what 180HP plus have unbeatable low end. I don't know I guess I'll talk to him see what he really wants.

It depends how fast he wants to go, if he wants a super fast street and strip car, go with the b16. If you want a car that is still fast for not too much money, then go with the zc turbo.
