Fuel Mileage Thread!
I searched the forum and there aren't that many discussions about the 01 - 05 Civics and gas mileage. I only found 3 archived threads... anyhow, I'll get it started.
- 2002 Civic LX Coupe 5-Speed
- Stock Rims
- 30 PSI in the tires
- Stock Air Filter
- "Rice" muffler that was on it when I got it (actually not too loud)
- First tank = 38.3 MPG
I drive a mix of city and highway and don't always baby it when shifting. I pulled a couple of quick starts on that tank.
I changed the rims to the lighter Rota's from my other Civic since it is under construction anyway, put the tires at 40 PSI, and added a K&N Filter. I'll post back up when I have a number with this configuration. I haven't checked the spark plugs yet either... will do so and replace if needed.
Any detailed info available on tuning these cars for fuel mileage using a VAFC or some-such device? I'm interestd in looking into something like that.

With my changes I achieved 40.4 MPG on my second tank with the car so far. Same driving style, same commute, roughly same AC use, etc. Still have not checked the spark plugs, will probably do so this weekend.
Very pleased with the LX on fuel mileage
Almost as good as my 1994 DX was before I started messing with boost on it.

I watched mythbusters last night and they did a drafting thing with 18 wheelers, and you get something like 16% less drag at 100 feet and 93% less drag at 10 feet(stupid).....im going to try the 100 foot one tomarrow when I go to atlanta.........anyways 38mpg
i get shitty mileage. auto with k&n and correct psi. some ac and not driven hard. i get on average 30mpg. i dont have much in my trunk or in my car. weird... i get my oil change regularly and do the required maintanece on time. rarely have windows down too.
(see car in sig)
*15x7 Fn01rs (forged, 10.3 pounds)
*205/50/15 Dunlope direzza tires
*0w20 mobil 1 oil
*38 PSI = tire pressure
*Drop in K&N
*78,000 miles on the car
Avg in shitty LA traffic = 46.2 mpg
With better conditions, and LRR tires (low resistance tires, im sure I can get the predicted 51!!!)

Well my '04 ex just hit 44K the other day, all i have is an AEM short ram, a 5 spd, rarely use my AC, love the windows and sunroof open and im about half city, and half highway driving and i average 36.2 last tank, but i do have lightweight konig feathers on the way, and im also a 265lb bodybuilder too, lol prob double that what most of you weight, lol
i got 46 mpg highway when driving from CT of NJ averaging 70 mph on 45psi 5 spd and new spark plugs and air filter.
why do people buy hybrids when they would save their money, but a 7th gen civic, drive properly and get close to the same mileage.

Indeed, I'm pretty sure your number is typical of an auto Civic. The automatic transmission seems to lose ALOT of efficiency over the manual. Of course, 30mpg is exceptionally good compared to all the SUV drivers out there

I was reading a bit on the Toyota Yaris forum and some of them do what they call "hyper miling" and do, in fact, draft trucks and other cars. Some of them report hitting 60 mpg with their cars.

With our gen of civics, its easy to break into the 35 range guys.
Now with the Hybrids, its easy to get i the 45 if not higher range. But im a ricer and put wider wheels on the sucker. haha
Just remember, dont gun it at signals, coast in neutral, and dont drive over 70 mph

I think that uses more fuel than staying in gear mate.

2001 Civic EX coupe with an Injen CAI, otherwise stock.
Roughly 30mpg due to my inability to drive below posted speedlimits and the need to race every car I come across. Oh and I like to drive the twisties as often as I can and when driving through there I do not putt putt around. :D
I also have subs and an amp in the trunk which add probably 50-75 lbs on the back. *shrug*
I dont get nearly the mileage you all do and that sucks cuz most of you probably arent payins $3.48/gallon at the cheapest station in town.

Correct, i'm paying about $10. Just over £1 ($2) per litre.

I just hit 74k miles, and i have the same problem phychochik has, i hardly ever go the speed limit, which i really should, and i love hearing my engine so i usually get anywhere from 31-35.
Is it really true, coasting in neutral takes more gas??
