My civic has done this 3 times in the past month. It is a 2002 with 70k and an auto.

Bascially when you go to start it it cranks and cranks and cranks and doesnt start, It doesnt sputter or anything its as though there is no fuel or spark at all. then you try it again and it starts instantly first crank or so.

Any ideas on what i should check? I am thinking it is either a coil or a fuel pump issue.


2/3 of the times it has occured it was rainy and on a hill the other time on flat ground and dry.

how much gas in the tank? these things are known for not wanting to start with little gas in the tank.

 

all three times the gas was above 1/2

any more ideas?

do you have to drop the tank to do the fuel pump on these cars?

 

no you dont, its under the back seat.... i have a stock pump laying around if you think you need it.

 

my 03 does that sometimes too. i never really paid attention to it, and just learned to live with it. i wonder what it could be. maybe the starter?

well mine cranks when this happens. Does yours?
