Default B18A Transmission Issues

Hia everyone.

I've got an '89 Si with a '94 B18A and what looks to be a '91-92 LS tranmission.

Since I've had the car the tranny has needed replacement. It was grinding third and fourth gear on every shift (if I didn't double clutch).

Last wedneday I had the transmission changed. The car is back to being drivable but it's still grinding into third and fourth.

At this point we're kinda like 'wtf' because the place we got the tranmission has never given us a bad part.

Could the clutch be cauing the problem?

Upon ripping apart the tranny we found an ACT pressure plate with what looks like a stock clutch.

At this point I'm kinda wondering if the tranny we have on now is garbage or if it's just the clutch. I'm no expert so I'm not really sure what effect the clutch could be having on the way the car shifts.

Basically our next course of action is to return the tranny and have a new one send and while we're doing that, replace the clutch with an ACT one to go along with the pressure plate.

Any comments or suggestions?

Sorry the hear about your trans. Looks to me that you just have bad luck. The third to fourth syncros are notorious for there premature wear. When you get that new trans run Royal Purple. Good luck

I doubt even the mighty synchromesh would help much. This transmission is junk.

I'm considering a D15B. Anyone wanna buy a B18A1 sans transmission?

the 90-91 trans and 92-93 have different sized imput shafts. 90-91 shaft is smaller. 92-93 is larger and the same size as 94+ hydro trans. if you use a 92+ clutch with 90-91 trans you can run into some issues. the 92-93 trans will not fit through a 90-91 disk. check out the code on the front of the trans to see what it is.

act street disk looks like a stock disk.

make sure you clutch is properly adjusted also.

hope you get it all worked out

Tighten up the clutch cable so that there is only a minimal amount of freeplay at the arm. Make sure the transmission is not low on fluid.

We are using the correct transmission and everything is adjusted properly. On top of that we've got new fluid in and it still grinds.

Seriously... Anyone want a B18A1 minus trans?

That's a good question. I didn't do the swap so I'd have to guess it was left stock.

Have fun blowing up D blocks

Did you check to see how worn your Pressure Plate and clutch disc are? Stretched clutch cable? Broken/stretched pedal linkage? I've busted my clutch pedal before, and I've seen how a stretched cable can affect shifting.

Seriously though, you could get new synchros for your tranny for 200 bucks from Gearspeed. I had mine done in my B16 tranny.

The funny thing is. The old tranny wouldn't even go into third or fourth without tonnes of abuse.

Once we put this new tranny in it would shift into third and fourth under 4000rpm without any fuss. A day later and it just grinds every time unless I double clutch.

methinks transmission.

it's got to be a ghetto shift linkage then. try a new one, it's cheaper than switching back to D-series

Alright; what should I be looking for? And how do I go about setting up shift linkage for the car that never came with the tranny I'm trying to use?

Actually the car came with a b-series and cable tranny, just not in the US. Not a Ys1 from an integra but a y1 which is pretty damn close. Besides tracking down a SIR shift linkage you have a few options. Cut and weld an integra linkage or my suggestion would be to buy a linkage from any of the companies that make mounts

hasport
Arizona race and Machine
Enjo
Etc.

I've never seen anyone run into problems with pupose built swap linkages from mount manufacturers.

Rebuild your tranny, most likely you will just need to replace the synchros for third and fourth gear, I've heard of those being the weak link commonly on B-series trans.

Visit my build thread if you're interested in a rebuild, it's not that hard

but did they cut it. your supposed to cut out 1 1/4" in or 1 1/8" inches. you have to cut that piece (chunk) out. its crucial!! i did it my self at my buddys shop. just make sure it goes back exactly the same way. drawl a long thin line down a 3 in section of the straitest spot to make sure you dont accidentaly put it back together upside down. do it to both.
