vtech issues
hi all, sorry to make 2 new posts but its different issues so i didn't want to scramble everything together. i purchased my 04 civic Si recently and i never really tested the vtech until yesterday.
I noticed that the vtech NEVER kicked in!! i went from 1-8 rpm and i never heard the roar of the engine get significantly louder or the pull of the car get stronger...when i drove my old 94 civic with vtech once you hit 4-5 rpm the engine would get really loud all of a sudden and you could feel the car start to pull stronger from the vtech kicking in...
is the vtech on the ep3's just weaker and less noticeable? or do i have a legitimate issue?
thanks fellow honda enthusiasts

hmm gotcha thanks for the help, i guess i was thinking too much of the vtech, like its a turbocharger or something...i was actually getting worried that the engine wasnt the original one....
thanks!
thanks!
Though as a note, as an 02+ si owner myself. Does anyone know what RPM range the i-vtec engages at? Im interested in what would be the optimal shift ranges for each gear to best take advantage of the i-vtec design.

:/ its not..
basically, just think of the k20a3 as not having the 'vtec' that you're used to at all.

so basically the i-vtec in our EP3's is there to give the car power period, rather than a fun suprise in the higher RPM ranges?
lame... this pushes me towards engine swap sooner than I had anticipated

i mean as a DD it runs great and has all the power you'll need, i was just concerned when i could never feel the vtech, but thankfully you guys have calmed my nerves...i so used to hearing the roar and feeling the pull of the older vtech cars
OK, according to MY mechanic...
it actually isn't a TRUE VTECH- there is No EXTRA LOBE on the cam like a true v-tech....
The i-vtech means its intake- it has 2 Valves for intake... it only uses one until you need power (Which for most of us, is ALL THE TIME!)
so it goes from 1 valve working, to 2 vavles by Computer control...
NOT "2 CAM" CONTROLLED like others.
Yes, disheartening... but oh well, k20a3- Solid Reliable...
(Oh, You wanted FAST? ...cough up another $4K and throw a turbo on it! = 250 HP!)
Sometimes lots of peep complain and say that the K20A3 does not have Vtec but actually they are wrong...We do have Vtec...Our Vtec is actually a economy Vtec...so, instead of it being I-Vtec like the other Vtec in K20A2, K20A, K20Z, etc...it should have been listed as I-Vtec-E...

well duh, its on the side of the car/engine bay.
but when people say 'vtec' you think of the distinct crossover noise/umphh in the powerband. not the ivtec-e.

I wouldn't feel too bad if I were you. The motor's still got potential as it sits stock.
BTW -- to the threadstarter -- how did you take it to 8K rpm?

You were close, but appearantly this cat has a form of VTEC we have NEVER heard of. So I guess no one can help you with your VTECH issues but if you have questions about your VTEC or I-VTEC, I am sure we would be more than happy to help you out.
