The first thing I suggest you do is find the best installer, a good installer can make the most out of even the shittiest alarm, or can make a good alarm amazing. If you have an expensive alarm, and it's bypassed within minutes because of its location, switches, or wiring hook up, your screwed and your car is jacked.
As for the *best* alarms, i'll leave that up to tekken and some more experencied members to explain.
Hoodpins, locks, sensors , poppers, window modules, can all be ADDED onto an alarm, so you basically can also start with a really good "brain" and add on to it rather than have to spend hardcore amounts of cash and get the features you want plus too many you don't. http://www.autotoys.com has a good stock of add on sensors and stuff that may not come with your alarm (such as an addon pager /window modules etc.)
Hope this helps

Teken I've noticed you say that you should have the sensors and relays shunted and isolated before, what exactly does this entail? Diodes? Some specific details would help as I'm currently taking apart my car and re-doing some wiring and have no idea what this means
Thanks!

teken: you're getting pretty technical on me here, what are the basics i need to know like what brand perhaps, and what i'm looking at as far as price...
i understand most of what you're saying as far as spikes and surge. the rest is kinda up in the air for me. maybe you can point out a *few* key questions i need to ask being as how you lift cars for a living(repo man), what is the most important things i need for a solid base system?

Get a Viper/DEI. After you install the items that Teken listed above, which will take a excellent installer 2 days (maybe $1g in labor/ $4-5 for the alarm and other parts) to look totally hidden, the car will be very difficult to steal. Unless they tow it, which the DEI carcomm system will come in handy...whenever it becomes available.
Hey, I got my Clifford Solaris installed for $500 including the alarm. Mine has all the features Teken described and plus it has Remote starter for manuel tranny's.
Hi impact siren, ignition kill, etc....

Now getting a bomb as installer is a different story. Bomb as one did mine and he did fuel cutt off, ignition cutt off and starter cutt off and those r way way way wya way way way deep in the passenger sides dash.

EVIL Teken: Just wanted to add a few things also... When looking for a *great* installer these are the key character traits that they exhibit... They will ask you 90% of all the questions as to placement, needs, future expansion...
If you are paying more for the alarm then the install then you are probably not getting a good install. If they offer free installation then more than likely this is just the basic cheesy install. Try and talk with an actual installer, without the salesman. The salesman usually only cares about the buck. He will try and sell you what he can make the most profit from and not necessarily what is best for you. If you get an installer that says the above mentioned advice is overkill RUN!!
