Default If you have Portflow retainers...........

Better go ahead and take them out!

I will have better pics once removed but....

around 25K miles, Spec B's used.

Note: the knife edged around the bottom lefthand side of the perimeter.

Yack - who almost lost a motor because of this chit

Here is my take on the Ti retainer issue:

Assumptions:

- In most cases higher lift and longer duration cams are used.
- The cars/motors in question are driven hard.
- There is more stress on the valve train.
- The motors that use the Ti retainers are being revved pretty high 9k RPMs

Possible solution to catastrophic failure of Ti retainers:

I think that this is more of a maintenance issue than a product defect issue. You should change your Ti retainers at a certain interval.

They are intended for race use. Real race engines are torn down every race and inspected. I don't think this is necessary in this case. However, I think it would be VERY wise to replace Ti retainers at a certain interval.

The interval to replace them is up to you. From what I have seen most Ti retainers seem to fail at about 25k to 35k miles when used with 'big' cams.

That is the price we have to pay for a lighter retainer.

Let me know if I am way off here.

A good friend of mine used to run in the Motorola cup with 3 Integra Type R's(Team Hurricane). He said he ALWAYS used stock retainers. Racing, or on the street. He said titanium retainers are not necessary.

I've been running stock retainers for the past year or so. Shifting at 9k sometimes, no problems.

I have heard the same advice and shared it here before. Titanium is NOT the best choice for daily driven cars unless you plan on a strict service schedule. There is no free lunch to be had with retainers.

.....why do we run Ti retainers anyway? (...cause they're lighter and prevent valve float right?) Can't we just run toda cams and valve springs with stock retainers? Any problems there?

I've been running those Portflow for the past 7k miles... Rev limiter is bounced off of everytime I drive it...

this is true, I have no problem with this, just letting all the stunna, show R wannabes know that unless they learn to wrench, they'll be buying a motor soon.

Kind of an FYI for high HP sissies that can't work on their chit

ughz....

i removed my toda spec b's and am running stock gsr cams (will change to itr's shortly)....

so, with stock cams, will my godspeed valvetrain get damaged/worn----
will shifting, at a MAX rpm of 8500rpm, be detrimental?

also, has anyone ever taken a look at their Toda valvesprings after let's say 30-60k miles with spec B's or C's, how'd they look? do you think they need to be changed at a certain interval as well?

So should I run Ti retainers w/ Spec B's and Toda Springs? How much are thouse bitches if you have to replace them every other oil change?

every other oil change is a bit much...but changing them every year along with your timing belt and just taking a look at your head is probably a good idea for ALL high hp B series motors

My Toda springs were checked and were flawless, and the pressure was right on. The springs had 18,000 miles on them with Spec C's.

I think the assumptions were right on I would like to add one more thing however, Toda valvesprings are egg-shaped, which I think adds to the wear factor...especially on the retainer's edges.

I guess they should be in the service maintenance plan with the PE belt, change out every 20k.

I checked my Ferrea Retainers recently, Looks good from what I can see. They have about 8,000 miles on them now, With plenty of high RPM use. I'll have them out when I switch in my new head in about a month, I'll take some measurements and check for wear.
