I want to firm up my brake pedal, and was considering getting some steel braid covered brake lines (earl's, goodridge, neuspeed). Anyone have any opinions on them? Any recommended brands? Thanks!

I have all four goodridge lines. The only difference I noticed is in panic stops. Braking is quick just like you want it in these types of situations. Other than that it was pretty normal.
Having the lines only feel different when you really use your brakes, other than that it is pretty much the same. If you want to get rid of the top play in the brakes, try replacing rotors and pads and get a new master cylinder. Also, get a set of speed bleeders and bleed the system REALLY well. That should help a bit. I would try the master cylinder before going with the stainless lines.
Only a few of the lines on the market are DOT approved. This basically means they are rigoroulsy tested to stand up to the demands of daily driving abuse. These are higher quality lines. I went with the Neuspeed's for that reason. They are more expensive, but DOT quality was important to me.
back from the dead.
my Goodrich lines just popped today after a panic stop Stomp on the brakes.
looks like dirt got under the braiding over the past 2 years and rubbed the inner hose thin enough for it to rupture inside the braiding so it leaks now and barely hold pressure.
I'm going to install stock lines again.
I would not use SS lines unless they have an outer rubber protective coating preventing dirt/grime from getting under the braiding and rubbing the inner hose right thru over time... this would have been a catastrophic failure if I was at a roadcourse or autox.
even a good visual inspection of the line reveals NO problems with the braiding, but it leaks and its scary! Ive had them on the car for 2 years now, daily driving mostly.
be careful you guys!

hey, mine were GREAT yesterday too.
just a heads up.
I know a lot of guys have had theses on their daily driver hatchies for years now, time to think about replacing them with new ones, either SS or stock, it doesnt matter.
I'm sure road conditions here in upstate/western NY are far worse then CA and out west.. its rainy/dirty/muddy/snowy/salty here... yuck.
