Default Turbo'ed auto?

Hey guys I'm on the fence with a decision.

I'm not a racer, I don't race, I don't like street racers.

My 94si w/ H23 is an auto because it better suits my lifestyle and my family.

However, I could use a little more useable power for those merges and occasional spirited drive.

Now I could go with the H22 swap, but that'd be BANK which I don't have right now.

Would it be a wise decision to go turbo w/ MILD boost on a stock auto H23?

Or would I be better off with the swap?

If your worried about money, turbo is DEFINATELY not the way to go. They cost a lot. H22 swap is the cheapest solution. Also, rebuild the tranny as the automatic prelude transmissions are notorious for failing.

Have you considered saving $ for a hatch and swapping a H22 down the road?

I would not run turbo with auto, although that is the only way you will make decent power with an auto tranny.

honestly man, if you are on any sort of budget, and want somethign that will suit your family, a turbo honda is not the way to go. loud, expensive, complicated, unreliable, problematic dont seem to be things you would want. an h22 swap would be much cheaper, just try to find someone who will do it for cheap/help you with it (use this site to find ppl like that)

good luck
signed a kid almost done with his h23 boost project.

h22 swap is going to be MUCH more inexpensive than a turbo setup. h22's are cheap and getting cheaper.

A Prelude does not suit any family, unfortunately. You might consider using that money trying to find a used 4 door Accord in good shape.

If you wanna make a bit more power but still keep it quiet, get a Megan header and some Crower stage 1 cams

if your going to get a turbo... i say learn how to drive stick.... cuz the auto trans isnt going to mix well with that. but if you want more power for "spirited driving" as you call it.. just get the H22 swap. cheaper. and it has enough power to keep you happy until you feel a higher need for speed.

thanks for the advice everyone!

I guess I'll think of and save for an H22 swap then.

I was just curious because I see cars with stock turbos and they're reliable.. I'm sure this is because of alot of R&D though.

You can turbo an auto..u just need to beef your tranny for example get a high stall tq convertor and a big *** tranny cooler..even with those things eventually your tranny will fail on you. Tho i have seen 5th gen auto turboed preludes...if you go turbo with an auto ur gona end up spending alot of money cuse ur gonna have problems down the road. Save for a h22..Best thing is sell that prelude cuse ur not gonna make solid mods besides I/H/E...and buy a 5th prelude or a civic hatch

I think you can bolt on and tune a turbo kit on the H23 for the same if not cheaper than the H22 swap, and it's way cooler to have a turbo H23 than another n/a H22 for the same price IMO. However, if there is no decent kit on the market, there may be a lot more thought, consideration, and frustration with piecing together and tuning a kit. I think with very mild boost (30-40whp) the auto trans would hold up, but I can't say for sure.
