Default Bouncing Tachometer

Gang,

Occasionally my tachometer on my 95 Accord would bounce. No increase in RPM and a couple of times the tach would drop to zero. Engine would run normally. I thought it was just that the tach cable would need to be replaced.

Yesterday I started it up and I had dificulty starting the car and got it moving when it would just cut off the engine completely. Got it restarted and drove to my mechanic. Once it acted like it didn't have any power but I was able to get it to the shop.

I need an idea on what it might be and the cost to repair. This is my work car and it's only got 251,000 miles on it. I love my 95 Accord wagon.

The tach gets its signal from the ignitor; and that is probably the problem.
A coil shorting will also cause a "stupid" tach.

Our 1995 has been doing that for about 4-5 years now. Still runs and drives fine. It happens like once every two weeks or so, its weird. Just a loss of continuity from the coil.

most likely faulty ignition control module located inside distributor. prices range from $60-$85 for a replacement and can be done in a few minutes with simple hand tools

In my '98 Accord, the tach gets its signal from the ECU, not from the ignitor. (Probably '98 is the first year for that system, since it's a new generation...)

... just in case someone with a newer car reads this thread...
