Default Failed emissions twice, even with a new cat?

I have been to emissions twice and failed. I failed carbon monoxide very badly.

My results are:

Hydrocarbons(HC)grams/miles

mine = 3.40
limit is = 1.00

Carbon Monoxide (CO) grams/miles

mine = 98.71
limit = 12.00

Oxides of Nitrgoen (nox)

mine = 00.23
limit = 2.50

The thing is, my car runs great, gets good mileage and never has any problems. It seems to be running very rich.

Can anyone help me out?

My setup is:

1992 hatch with 2001 JDM B20 w/ gsr tranny.
New magnaflow cat
megan 4-1, 2.5 inch header
Neptune
P75 LS ecu

Definately running rich. Between a simple fuel trim adjustment and an actual OEM Honda cat, you should be good.

A stock car with a stock ECU, stock engine, stock catalytic converter and a stock O2 sensor produce....stock emissions, which pass.

You have a non-stock ECU, which no one knows how well it's been tuned...especially for emissions.

You have a non-stock catalytic converter, which no one knows how effeciently it's working. Many factors effect its performance and lack of it - one of them being the ECU tune. Run rich for too long and you foul out the converter leaving it useless.

Who knows about your O2 sensor and if it's stock (don't run Bosch, especially for emissions purposes)...but it's also susceptable to the same kind of degradation that the cat converter is. So again, if you've been running rich for too long, it could be useless now.

So yes, it looks like you're running rich. What's the maintenance look like? Checked the timing? Set the valve lash? What octane gas are you running? Had you tried what Locash suggested? They would have been my suggestions...

maintrenance is great, everything's where is should be. did a valve adjustment and that was fine. I am running 87 octane. This is no beater, I take care of it.

for the test you could run a higher octane fuel... as far as magnaflow for cats i know a number of people up here that have used them and passed emissions no problem (ie. those cats actually do work).... the biggest issue with my B20 is I fine that it does run rich at idle... this is a tuning issue that has to be sorted out...

(i'm in canada... don't know where you are and if the specs for testing are the same or not...)

good luck!

It failed for the third time. I improved my CO though, it was at 98 and now it's at 50. I am going to bite the bullet and find an OEM cat. We tested the mangaflow cat I have on there now and it's not even lighting off, it's not working at all.

Try running a stock ecu not Neptune or other engine management software. Or have it tune to 14.7-15 A/R so the CAT will work properly.

I got an OEM GSR cat and am in the process of having it fit my 2.5 collector etc.

If this doesnt work (which I think it will) then I'll for sure get a stock LS ECU and see how that goes.

I went back again. This time I got a stock LS program for the ECU and I installed a stock OEM Integra cat. I failed with this set up as well. I got a 60 and the limit is 12.

This is better than a 96 for sure.

I broke down and bought some of that 'never fai'l emissions junk you put in your tank. I am hoping with that, the stock cat, and a super lean out on the fuel again that this will make me pass.
