Ok guys, I've looked over my civic a little more, LS/VTEC turbo, bad ticking sound in the head after being overrevved.

everyone says it's a bent valve, I'm not so sure. So what is it? The car sounds like a boxer engine out of the exhaust. The ticking is in the head, and gets louder as you rev.

Car starts up and idles perfect. It drives the same as always. No missing what so ever.

Compression check is as follows:

distributor --> 144psi --> 136psi --> 133psi --> 133psi

The car has low compression pistons, that is the reason for the low numbers. However, I can't imagine the car would run, idle, and give those numbers if it was a bent valve.

So, is it worth it to just get my valve lash done and see where that gets me? Help!

Do the valve lash adjustment yourself. It's not hard.

It's that or the mysterious "injector ticking"

 

it's just that I don't have the special tool that you need for VTEC heads. And the cost of that, is about the same as having Honda do it for me.

I had thought about the injector ticking. I just put in brand new 780cc injectors, and tuned the car. Then drove it about 2500 miles straight, non stop. And there was no ticking. Not until the over rev happened.

Is there any way to check the injectors? Diagnose if that is my problem or not?

On VTEC heads it makes life easier, definitely worth $13 to me.

 

not trying to thread hijack but i have a clicking in the head also but it's only at idle that i can hear it so on the topic of bent valve could that be it?

It could be a lot of things, the LMA's could have been damaged, something wrong with the valves, clearances out of adjustment.........

yeah, I'm worried it's my LMA's as well. My compression checks out too good to be a valve.

I'm just gonna do the cheaper of the 2, and adjust the valve lash first. If that's not it, I'll do the LMA's.

Valve lash is a 30-45 min job at best.. and more than likely your problem.

 

for the injector ticking you can unplug the injectors one at a time and see if it goes away when you unplug a certain one, or you can use a screwdriver and your ear. Try the screwdriver thing first...

will that harm anything, not having lubrication of fuel while the engine is running? Should I disconnect the plug wire also while I do this, so as not to create a lean condition in the cylinder?

 

yea, disconnect the plug wire. It won't hurt anything, just don't do it at anything other than idle and for any length of time. It won't take very long to figure out if the ticking goes away or not.

not the injectors. And the timing is perfect. Also, I can't see anything out of the ordinary in the valvetrain, and I can turn the engine over by hand, all the way, without hitting any resistance (valves) other than the slight compression resistance.

So, I'm gonna do the valve lash adjustment next.

I was trying to eliminate everything else that would cost money. I don't have the lash tool, but I figured that if I needed it, I'd get it last after I checked everything else that was "free".


So, really quick, when the valve lash comes out of adjustment, what causes the ticking? Is it that the rocker arms are too far away from the cam lobes, so they hit the lobes harder than they should when they make contact? I mean, what exactly does the adjustment do?
