Default M2F4 tranny

I will be installing a quaife lsd and a mfactory 4.64 final drive. Now the M2F4 tranny has a really short 5th gear, something like 4k at about 60mph and with the new final drive, it's going to be a lot worse. I'm just wondering which 5th gear I can use from all the h/f series trannies without modification.

I believe you can use the H23 5th, I think theres something around here about it. I've got that same setup and yeah cruising was around 5k at roughly 75-80mph

dig through machine4321's posts in the prelude archives. he has an M2S4 5th in the M2F4. But as has been covered many times beofre it is not a direct swap. 32mm of the gear's thickness has to be removed.

my m2f4 with a 4.71fd is at about 4800 at 80mph

70mph is almost exactly 4000rpm.

Tire size makes a HUGE difference.

My 225/50/16 are 10% larger diameter than my old 205/40/16s. In your case that would be a difference of 400 rpm at 70mph, Matt.

Just to put it into perspective...

that is a HUGE difference, damn.

Well that trans is up for sale now anyways, but that would have been a good thing to consider some time ago.

the tire size thing won't work for me because i will lose acceleration in 1st - 4th and the only gear i want longer is 5th
hmmm how much would it cost for just the 5th gear from the m2a4 or m2b4?

Whats the reason for the new FD anyway??? Do you race? Sometimes you just have to make a sacrifice in one place to have what you want elsewhere. Whats more important? Cruising or accelerating faster?

I would love the see a 4.26 vs 4.64 vs 4.71 0-60 comparison. Seems like alot of money to spend if youre not competing on a race track.

a lil offtopic but my question is.. i have an m2s4 tranny (h23a1 92-96 prelude SI) and i have a m2a4 tranny, swapping 5th gear, is it just a simple take out 5th out of the m2s4 and throw it into the m2a4 or do i have to do something to the 5th gear to fit in the m2a4?? thanks in advanced

o yea, on the m2s4, 3k rpm is 60mph, 35k rpm is 70mph and 4k rpm is 80mph

Fully built and DD??? Those just never made sense to me....Just my opinion though. I just can't see building and engine and relying on it for every day driving.
Take it to a RoadCourse once in awhile at least...I just would have put the FD money towards a daily beater.

Let us know how it works out though......
Maybe you could make a list of Gear/MPH/RPM to help other decide on it....
Any info on the build???

sounds good! I DO think some JUNs would suit it better. Power dropped at 7800 on my friends Pro2 setup.....My JUNs go past 8300 with an ST VT.

the pro 2 are more aggressive then the JUN and i got the pro2 for an awesome price. something like 550CDN taxes in which is like half the price of JUN cams.
just because power drops off at 7800 for your friend, doesnt mean it will do the same for me

Going to differ with setup I suppose. Hes only making 11:1cr on 87mm's as am I. We have almost identical setups and the JUNs are better plain and simple.
A more agressive cam doesn't always mean better results though. I would have to see a Pro2 vs JUN to agree. The one chart I saw when they 1st came(on the same car) out had the Pro2's making a little more power at 3500-4500 and from there the JUNs had more in them.....Where were the Crower3's during this??? Perfectly named; 3.
Not going to beat up on the Skunks as I love my Stage 1's with stock compression!
JUNs.......10yr+ old TECH FTW!!!!
Please keep us/me posted on your setup progress, I am extremely curious to see whta the FD and Pro2's do for you.

couple years ago i made 213whp on crower 2's on stock block and a "junk2" manifold which everyone hates on but it worked for me.
hoping for over 250whp. crower stage2 to skunk pro2, skunk2 IM/70mm TB to ITB, stock block to 89mm 12+ CR

so we'll see...i am still waiting for the block to come back.

Actually it was just proven that the junk2 made power.....So its a Skunk2 until further notice.
