Default Deal or No Deal?

Well here it is. I found a CRX Si with a blown motor and a good tranny. Clean title with just over 220 K on the body. It has an Si blue paint job and has very little rust. As seen in the photo the passenger door has some rust which is typical of the CRXs.

The guy wants $800 for it. I can get a 1.5L SOHC motor for $200. I figured if I have $1200-$1500 into this total after taxes and fixing a few small flaws, that is a steal. I 30+ MPG daily beater and what a deal!

This will eventually turn into a project thread as long as the deal goes through and everything works out for me. Thanks for the input and advice.

Bob

I'd find out how long it has been sitting there first.

Get a look at the underside of it if at all possible.

Haggle with him on the price for sure.

It's been re-painted so you don't know how much the body is fucked up underneath. Plus, it's obviously been "modded" so you don't know how much he fucked with.

I'd give him 500. The tranny, if it really is mint, is worth like $150.

I would go for it, its not that badly priced, it looks like its in fairly good condition as well, from the pictures atleast.... Try and talk him down though, always try to bargain... if he doesnt go for it, youre not getting screwed, but youre not getting a great deal either. Its pretty average.

Definately check underneath though, if its been sitting for more than a year it may be too rusted underneath to even bother saving.

Talk him down. Lets say $1000 gets you a running beater (I refuse to pay that much for a car, but that's beside the point)

it's a repaint, and doesn't look like a quality one at that: -$150 because it may be covering up really bad areas and it makes your beater stick out like a sore thumb

Looks like it's been sitting for a while -$50

It's old -$0 most beaters are...

It's rusty - $50 rust kills, but for a beater.. meh

It doesn't run -$300

That leaves you at $450. Honestly I wouldn't give $500 for a beater that doesn't run. Hell... I paid $500 for my current beater and got 80K out of it and it's still going

He'll get $75 or less at a scrapyard which is pretty much all it's worth as it sits. But if some of the parts are good, give 75 for the shell and pay accordingly if the parts are good.

Go with $500 cash if you think you cna fix it. if he doesn't take it, walk away.

Is that rust on the door a hole or just chipped away paint? I cant tell. If its a hole than there is a good chance the rest of that shiny blue is hiding some brittle rusted ****. Than again, if you dont care as long as it'll get you from A to B, then get it. I would pass if your looking for a solid *** ride. Eitherway, LOOK AT THE UNDERSIDE and HAGGLE THE PRICE!

Either way man, its your dime and your descion! Hope your happy with whichever one you make. Best of luck.

take a refrigerator magnet out to it and find out where the bondo is. It can be a good bargaining tool. But I'd say try for $400.

I'd say worth 800, the heater controls didnt look to be busted. Tail lights and head lights look good, body is pretty straight, but it dosn't hurt to bargain. the rear hatch alone is worth 4 to 5 hundred.

Keep in mind this is just a beater I'm going to deliver pizza with. I've been delivering in a built H22 94 Civic coupe for a while now and its just not practical. I'm boosting my H22 Civic soon, so I need an alternative. I'm putting a headunit, speakers, and maybe some touch up paint work to it. BTW, I have KYB AGX struts and Skunk2 slip over coilovers laying around. I don't think the struts will fit, but will the coilovers? He said the suspension may need adjusted, so I can save some $$$ with my old coilovers.

oh if this is jut a beater then pass and get a running pos and pass this deal on to some one who wants a crx

it sounds like it depends on the area your in. in chicago this is a hell of a deal but in areas where there is alot of rust it sounds like its not a deal so i dont know

Update:

The engine does run. It needs a starter and possibly a new dizzy. But the motor was out of a Civic DX with only 89,000 miles on it. So a running CRX that needs a little TLC. Much better deal and well worth 800 bucks, right?

I'd take it. Try for $500 at least, but I'd still take it.
