Default help with replacing coolant temp sensor (etc)

before i go taking things apart and getting coolant everywhere, i got a new etc sensor from advanced yesterday because I suspect that mine is bad due to really bad starts in the morning. my question is: i know that there is an A and B sensor for the coolant temp, Are they the same type of sensor? I want to make sure i am putting the right one in the right spot. Advanced only has 1 coolant temp sensor on their system.

also,
when i unplugged the wire from the old sensor in the block, (underneath and forward of the distributor closer to the headlights with the green connector) and connected the new one while it was in my hand my fan turned on. it made me jump at first. why would the fan go on? i cant imagine the temperature outside is any hotter than the coolant temp, unless my old sensor is really shot.

i know there is a lot in here but any help would be appreciated.

the past few days it has been hot out in the morning about 80+ and where i park my car it is in the sun. To my delight my car fires right up, the first crank when i set off for work! so im guessing it has to be something temperature related.

i haven't replaced the coolant temp sensor yet, i have to get the proper open ended wrench and area to work on it to do so.

any ideas now?

@vaporxx2006- yes thats the one. follow the lower radiator hose connected to the engine. it should be besides it.
