Not popping Vtec?
Hey, i just recently put an ls vtec setup into my 91 crx and am not engaging vtec. before this i had a b16 in the car and vtec was working fine, but that motor blew and now i've spent about a year piecing the ls vtec together. The motor runs and drives fine and sounds extremely healthy but vtec doesn't cross over and the car is self rev limiting at 7k. I've checked the wiring to the best of my knowledge and can't find anything wrong. I'm running a spoon chipped pr3 and even tried switching ecu's with my buddies stock pr3 but still no dice. Is something different in wiring up an ls vtec for vtec in comparrison to the b16? Im out of ideas and going CRAZY without my vtec so any help will be appreciated, thanks

yeah, i was thinking it might be the vtec solenoid but im not sure if it is and don't wanna spend the cash buying one just to find out its not the problem. Is there anyway i could test the vtec solenoid to see if its faulty?
popping vtec is when you break a cam.
check and re-check your wiring. VTEC is acuated by your ECU and vtec solenoid.
There are lots of parameters for the ECU to allow vtec to engage such as:
>speed above 20mph (the VSS must send signal to the ECU)
>throttle position above 20% (tps voltage to ECU)
>vtec solenoid working properly (solenoid requires "X" ammount of oil pressure)
check your wiring and start to eliminate possibilities.
maybe check your oil pressure too.
When you switched to your friend's PR3 ECU did you still have the 7K rev limit?

if it self limiting @ 7000rpm then it's probably running in "limp mode" on default fuel and ignition maps. The ecu is seeing a problem somewhere.. let it run for awhile and pull the codes

how would you check the code on a jdm pr3 ecu? would i see or hear something?
sorry to use your thread i just didnt see a point in starting another one on the same topic.
i'm not sure if my vtec is working either...would you notice the change to vtec or would it be perfectly smooth?

yes my car is obd0, and when i swapped ecu's with my friend the car still rev limited at 7k. the check engine light is on but its always been on since i had my b16 so i haven't checked the codes, i know its supposed to be obvoius but i've been overlooking it so i'll run the codes and get back
if vtec engaged you should feel and hear the difference. You can actually hear the crossover and the rpm needle should be climbing noticebly faster lol, damn i miss that feeling, freaking a i gotta figure this **** out...
please just search and diagnostically check everything first...there are seriously like 14-17 threads a week about and the non popping vtec
don't have an automatic ecu do you? 7000rpm redline... hmmm
btw there were 2 years worth of OBD1 PR3's put into DA integra's in 92-93 as well as the 92 CRX in japan.... most of them are OBD0, easy to tell the difference.
The CEL can really be your friend, believe it or not.. lol

I checked the cel and in getting trouble code 6, i looked it up and it has something to do with the coolant system. I also read something else in another thread about the coolant sysem being a possibility in preventing vtec. Last night i tried swapping out the 2 coolant sensors on the head under the dizzy with two from my bros car, reset the ecu and im still getting the code so that wasn't the problem, any ideas guys? also, sorry it took so long for me to repost, i tried to post last night but since im a noob it limits me to 5 post a day
