GReddy mufflers (amongst many other manufacturers) have a habit of rusting out inside the muffler, because the steel wool batting inside collects moisture and allows it to sit for long periods of time on untreated metal surfaces. Chances are this is what happened, and then the force of the blow knocked something loose.
