Oil pressure light flickers at idle?
Just got the car tuned today.. took it for a ride and now the oil pressure light flickers at idle. It goes away when I give it gas. I have a pressure gauge hooked up . .it sits at around 9psi at idle and goes to about 20psi driving around lightly.
The last motor I had did the same thing right before it threw a rod. The oil pressure sender is the same sender from that motor. I'm going to try changing that and see if it helps but what else can I check for?
Also, will bad oil seals in the turbo cause that?

Holy crap thats low oil pressure!! mine peaks at about 100 psi, and at idle after its warmed up it drops to 25-30 psi. You have something wrong! get it fixed before the motor gets messed up.
I let the car sit for about an hour, went out and drove it and it seemed to be ok. it was around 20 at idle and 40 while low rpm light load driving. As in not going over 3k. Does that sound about right? its a d16y7 bottom end d16y8 head. ihi-rhb5. The oil pressure is dropping as the motor gets hotter.
that is scary low oil pressure.. do you have an oil cooler? if that has a hole or is not holding pressure, that can do it.
the oil line for your turbo could also be the issue, or your oil pump could somehow be going bad. either way.. you probably shouldnt drive the car until you find the problem.

I seen some oil in the hot side IC piping, so im guessing one of the oil seals are bad. Could that be causing the oil pressure to drop?

Oil pressure should be 80 psi at start up, thats where the bypass in the pump is set @. warm idle should be 20-25 and cruzing should be 60-70 psi. The y series are known for lame oil pumps, it probably needs rebuilt.

the motor probably needs rebuilt? it was just rebuilt. It only has 12k on it.

oil pressure is at 30psi at 3k ..It seems kinda low. I was expecting atleast 50psi but I seen somewhere 10psi per 1000rpm. Would a new oil pump do any good?
the oil feed line for the turbo could be leaking at the t for your oil pressure sensor and where your line attaches to the block. if that is leaking, there goes most of your oil pressure.
if the oil seals in the turbo were going, you would be burning a shitload of oil, but dont believe that it would affect your oil pressure as bad as the range of numbers you are seeing. i could be wrong on that though.

I thought the oil seals were leaking on the turbo but they arent.
I'm going to check the oil feed line over. I don't believe it is leaking because I still have the same amount of oil.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I'm going to try replacing the oil pump this weekend. I would hate to spend 185 on a toga HV and that not be the problem.

is it safe for light load driving with these numbers? this car is my daily driver and i'm on a pretty tight budget. I won't have money to get the oil pump replaced until Friday

I thought I had fixed the problem. I relocated the gauge sender closer to the block. When I first started the car it was 60psi at idle. 20psi warm and 50psi at 3k.
Now the pressure is reading 10psi at idle and i'm not sure why. It continued to drop as the oil got hotter.

Oil pressure probably is getting lowered when its warmed up, because the oil becomes thinner. Did you replace the bearings by any chance ? Did you use teflon tape on anything, I know that can break off an cause clogs.
did you plastigauge your bearings for the proper clearances. do you remember what the clearances. also did you take the pump apart and inspect for scoring and use a feeler gauge
I didnt build the motor so im not sure of the clearances. I planned on replacing the oil pump this weekend and the bearings the weekend after that. I'm just hoping the car lasts til then. I drive 60 miles round trip everyday. it is a daily driver
Bearings cause low oil pressure more often then an oil pump. I would drop the oil pan, and inspect to make sure nothing is clogging up the system. A long with pulling all the oil lines off an clearing them out. Like I said, teflon tape can cause issues
I don't see how the pressure can still be at 10psi warm idle when it is at 60 psi at start up. I don't see how I can lose that much pressure over the oil getting thinner.

Unless its a clogged, I don't see a pump causing the issue.

Think about it this way, youve got ice, water and steam. Youre trying to jam Ice through a tube, its going to take a lot of psi to jam it through. You try and pour water through, even less, steam, no effort.
Your oil works the same way when it gets warmer it takes less pressure to push it where it needs to go. So as it heats up and gets thinner the pressure drops.
Since youre running like 1/2 - 1/3 of what the recommended oil pressure is, i probably wouldnt drive it. If youve got no other option, i guess you can go for it, but dont be surprised if your engine seizes up.
