Yeah it shouldnt be a problem. Just prep the valve cover really well before painting. I used 400 for my entire cover.... Its been over a year and still looks like it did the first day I painted.....
k so i need to sand it down and whatnot... do i really need to use primer? and if i do does the primer have to be high heat as well?
400 primer, 400 base coat, and if you like the shine, use a high heat clear coat as well. As far as prep... I sanded and cleaned the cover with some acetone. Pretty much straight foward job. I used Duplicolor high heat paint from AutoZone. worked perfect...
Valve covers barely get warm .... it's hotter in my car with the heat cranked up. I'm more likely to burn myself by pressing my hand against the vents than I am from leaning on my valve cover.

Because unless you have an oven that will go up to 650+ degrees, you'll never cure the 1200-degree paint on your valve cover, and it'll come off like ceramic dust every time you touch it.

I agree, high heat paint isn't necessary, just get some crinkle paint if you want that crinkle finish and stick it in the oven.
I did a custom job with regular duplicolor and it turned out fine. That was actually a year ago now.
