Default 2 small problems: Brake noise and exhaust rattle

A search for "exhaust rattle" turned up nothing, and I'm not quite sure what to search for for the brakes. So here are the problems:

*Edit: i believe the brake part I'm interested in is the "shim"*
For some time now, the brakes have been making a strange noise when I come to a stop. It's like a crackling/popping sound just as the car is slowing to 5mph or less. I took the wheel off and fiddled around with the brake pads. I put some grease on the contact points of the metal pad that backs the brake pad, and the noise stopped for about 2 days or so. The noise also doesn't happen when the roads are wet. Is there any way to get a new one of the pieces of metal? What is this part called anyways?

Now for problem #2: My exhaust is constantly rattling. Sometimes at idle, sometimes when I apply a bit of throttle, sometimes when I let off the throttle. Yesterday I looked underneath the car and it looks as if there's a section near the resonator that's hitting something on the bottom of the car. I have heard talk before of heat shields being the culprit, can anyone confirm this?

TIA

yep shims, also clean the pads off with some brake cleaner and put some disc brake quite on the backs. the rattle could be caused by the heat sheild, try shaking it while your under the car.

Ok, so I checked the heat shield and it's attached pretty solidly. However, the exhaust is routed very close to it (very small 5mm gap between exhaust and heat shield). So I bent the heat shield out of the way so now there's about a centimeter of space. I haven't tried driving it yet, but we'll see.

I also bought some brake pads with new shims at NAPA, but my brother took the tools that I need right now so I'll do that later today.

Thanks for your help.

the exhaust rattle should be the heatshield, i had the same problem recently.... easiest thing to do, is just take off the whole heatshield thats on the exhaust. its pretty simple... only thing it will do is make the center console, and where the ebrake cables go a little warmer..... good luck!
