okay i just got my 98 prelude last week, getting adjusted to it from driving an automatic for over 3 years....I've notice to save on gas a bit, i've been driving in the streets at 40mph on 5th gear, RPM at 2k..... not at 4th gear in which the rpm is like 2.5 k...because the manual states to drive on the highest gear with the less engine load possible

so at 40 mph, what gear is everybody on?

 

5th, just shift to 4th if you need to accelerate

 

Probably 4th unless there is some downhill.

 

it sucks on freeway, wish there was a 6th gear

Personally I say screw economy!! 4omph@5000 in 2nd gear is the way to roll! The pull you get from that is enough to rival some V8's!! It helps when you Shift at 8500 like me though!

doesnt matter to me any more.. i vote 3rd! what you pay for gas is gonna be expensive.. even if you save a few gallons.. drive and have fun doing it.. hell your paying for it get your moneys worth. Or if your legs are strong enough you could cut out the bottom and flinstone it

Engine load is higher in a higher gear.

5th gear at 40mph &gt; 4th gear at 40mph

 

5th gear. Thats what an automatic would be in. If I want to speed up I will usually downshift. Sometimes I'll do 30 in 5th.

In absolutes ricers speak. Not the path of a jedi this is.

 

I get to 5th gear as fast as possible, so I personally would be in 5th unless there is unjust stress on the engine. (Like going up a steep gradient) Being in a lower gear is just a waste of gas and your engine.

 

F u c k 5th gear!!!!! are u guys kidding? 5th gear at 40 mph,why do u even own a prelude.......go get a hybrid,that way u can drive a million miles on a tank,and drive 40 in 5th.

I say 2nd or 3rd tops,what is the point of driving a sporty car if u just want economy and to drive around in the weakest part of your powerband.....

U are not going to hurt ur prelude driving around at 4k instead of 2k,regardless of what the owners manual says.

Hey retartdo being in 2nd at 40mph would put you in VTEC. There is no reason to be in VTEC constantly. Growup ricer.

 

I'm assuming he means cruising at 40...and if so, what the hell is anyone doing cruising around in 2nd or 3rd gear? You're a complete moron if you ride around at 4,000+RPM all the time. You drive a sporty car so you can use the power when you need it, not all the time. Does that mean you cruise down the highway at 80 MPH in 3rd? If so, super, but I'd prefer my engine to last. Oh yeah, and I'm sure the owner's manual and the people at Honda who designed the car have no clue what they're talking about. They tell you things for a reason.

Perhaps its because most the time i drive like a normal human being, and not some child that always has a core to settle with whatever vehicle happens to be beside him.

I cruise 5th gear almost all the time during the day even when going like 20mph....riding like 800rpms.... lol

but, usually at night...ride the 5.5k+ around in sleep mode. someone comes up trying *** you out, one push of the petal and its go-time.

Also when passing people that are ******* useless to the road and in my way. Just got to run at high rpms....creep up to them...and .......zroom. like a rocket.

sometimes they don't even see me pass them. its like a BLUR BITCH.

 

Im in FIF son! . If I need to hit some vtak.... I do a quick drop to 4th then up to 3rd real quick.

 

Yeah, its not like he can just sift a bank over if he needs some grunt. Sucks being stuck with only 5th and reverse.
