Default 90 Accord, sticks in 2nd gear

My son has a 90 Accord that sometimes won't shift out of 2nd gear. It's a 4 spd auto. The engine is a 4 cyl. I suppose a 2.2 or 2.3?

I'm looking for suggestions short of replacing or overhauling the transmission.

any ideas?

I read that one guy was buying Hondas with failing automatic transmissions and fixing them by cleaning them with Seafoam. Instruction asks for several minutes of driving in different gears, he was riding it for about 100 miles - more than in the instruction. Then flushing the transmission fluid. After that transmission was OK again.

I haven't tried that and cannot tell if this is going to really help. Maybe it may make things worse.

I had problems with transmission on my Accord 91 - bought a used JDM transmission from eBay and replaced myself. It wasn't working perfectly - I added DuraLube additive and in a couple of month it got better. Maybe adding something like this will help in your case too.

The engine is 2.2
