s2k...80k reg oil to amsoil..
wats up my s2k just hit 80k i got it about a month ago previous owner ran reg oil and i wana switch to synthetic amsoil.. friend told me that if i switch it up it will make all my seals leak...wats the deal??
you shouldnt have any problems switching. it is true though synthetic oil will shrink certain seals that were produced using different materials. The seals on the s will not be affected.
if i can remember correctly, synthetic oils have more detergents in them that break down gunk and carbon build ups. Some of this carbon and gunk actually help seal the seals.
So when you add the synthetic, the gunk gets broken down, and potential leaks arise.

if you switch to synthetic, i recamend you do two oil changes.
change it the first time and let the car sit idle for a while, cool down, and then change it again.

Using a good true synthetic will help your engine run longer and cooler than dino juice. Why waste time and money changing your oil every 3000 miles not to mention the waste and helping to create a greater dependence on foreign oil. Instead use a good 25,000 mile oil. Seals, from everything I've read, if changing to synthetic causes leaks, that seal(s) was already leaking, it was just some gunk blocking it. On some synthetics, it has been reported it has even help rejuvinate the seal. While this is not guaranteed, it has happened. It is a proven point that a true synthetic oil can raise your gas mileage as much as 3-8%. At $3 a gallon, that's a bonus as well.

It won't hurt to go either way. I have to believe these oil manufacturing companies such as Castrol, Mobil1, etc. They say it won't hurt.
no need for two oil changes when switching to syn. Just keep an eye on your oil level and add accordingly. Just stay consistant with the type of oil you use, syn or non-syn.
