carbon fiber overlay. Need help and advice
Hi there,
i just bought some 2x2 twill Carbon Fiber off ebay and looking to do a few carbon fiber projects on my car.
1.
First off, i have a carbon fiber hood and was hoping to roughly duplicate the pattern and color. I know i bought the same twill pattern, but as for color would i have to use pigment in the resin or do most companys that make cf hoods not use any. (mines vis btw)
2.
As for resin and hardner im basicly clueless on what to buy. i know i need a clear resin with uv protection, but other then that im not really sure (epoxy or poly?). what you be recommended for exterior parts.
3.
What is the best way for appling the cf resin. use a foam brush?
4.
Also these are the steps i was going to use for laying the cf. please let me know if i should change anything:
-sand off the paint/rough sand 4 better stick
-spray glue so cf sticks to part
-overlay CF
-resin
-another thin layer of resin
-sand (220 grit)/sand (300 grit)/sand (600 grit)
-clear/wet sand (600)/clear/wet sand (600) - repeat if needed
-buff
-BEER - repeat... many times
Thanks

I posted this once before but I think it got deleted. The post below will probably answer all of your questions. This is a project I finished last year.

If you read that post and still have questions I would be happy to answer them.

crx12: Do you have any experience with composites that hold more structural functionalily...such as splitters, air dams and diffusers?
In the middle of reading some aerodynamics books and looking into what materials to use. Interested in CF with honeycomb cores. If you had a link or something that would be great.

Yes, but I don't have any links that relate specifically to using core materials. The type of core you use will depend mainly on how much you want to spend and what sort of manufacturing process you will be using. You can really get into spending a lot of cash using Nomex core or something like that but you can use less expensive core as well. Shoot me an IM with specific questions and I will do my best to answer them for you. If I don't know the answer which routinely happens I can help point you in the right direction at least.
