What is excessive blowback?
Family has a 92 Accord EX with 100,000 miles. According to my mother, few months back it started leaking oil crazy fast. So much so, every time she wanted to drive she supposedly had to fill it with oil. The mechanic said it was excessive blowby and she basically needed a new engine. Car is over 5 hours away so all this info is from my mechanically challenged mother....Not to say that I am any more knowledgeable. Can anyone explain or provide a link to what the mechanic meant by excessive blowback? And if I truly do need a new engine for the car, is it worth it? I'd like to use the car as a daily driver considering my other vehicle is a gas hungry Mustang Cobra.
Thanks in advance.

If he said 'blowby' that's combustion chamber pressure leaking down past the piston rings. Usually means you need new rings. Since the pistons have to come out, that's often a good enough excuse to get a used engine (or at least shortblock).
I have a hard time beleiving that 4 litres of oil is being burned everytime the car is being used. the car would be smoking all over the place. thast extremmely unlikely with 100,000 miles
I'm pretty sure it is that bad. The mechanic basically said he could fix it, but couldn't guarantee anything. That most likely the problem would return and the only true fix would be a new engine. Also, the work to fix the engine would most likely cost more than just getting a new one. Which leads me to my next question. What type of engine and roughly what kind of cost and I looking at to get a new one with installation? I don't have anywhere near the expertise or the tools to try this myself. Don't mind a little power, but reliablility and affordability are my main concerns. Oh, and any opinions on whether a private mechanic place vs. a dealership when it comes to this stuff?
Oh and Stealthman, my mother has a way of exaggerating things. As far as I know there wasn't great amounts of smoking but the loss of oil was significant enough that she had to add oil on a daily basis.

i beg to differ. My 95 Talon TSI thats sitting in my garage has bad rings, and it burns at least 2 quarts per 100 miles. LOL. its actually quite embarrassing to drive something that smokes like it does.

man, i'd be more concerned about the people drivng behind you, your gonna kill em with that smoke.
to the OP, just get another F22B1 since thats whats you had in the first place. it already has vtec and has the most power out of the B1 and B2 and will give you less complications. a simple swap like this can be done by a private shop. if the shop is familiar with hondas and has the time it can be done in a day.
