As an art project my wife wants to paint designs on the hood of her EF hatchback. One of the things that concerns me is how heavy coats are a huge NO-NO when painting a car. I'm sure you can imagine how artistic brush stokes are gonna be way thicker than any spray coat, so I'm looking for tips on how this should be done so it won't chip.
Of course she can't use her acrylic canvas paint... so what paint should she use?
If we use a rattle can clearcoat how well will that protect it?

Make sure you scuff the surface before painting, and make sure the surface is clean. I'm sure that rattle can clear will be ok for a bit, but it can't protect and hold up as well as professional CC. As for what to paint the art work with, I'm not too sure, I would have to say automotive paint.
people are painting their cars with rustoleum paint and its holding up....just make sure it's dry and then clear coat it. i would do atleast 3 coats of clear if you want it to hold up for a long time.
i've seen pictures of andy warhol and a few other artists from the past painting like bmw's and porsche's i forgot the website though. these were track cars so i dunno how it would hold up to daily driving.
good luck!
sounds like a fun project. post some pics if you can!
