Has anyone found a good way to make the cup holder actually functional? The way they are designed is totally crap IMO. They can't hold anything taller then a can a pop especially when you are turning. If anyone has found a better way to make it functional please chime in. Thanks.

i did this...problem solved...you dont have to have that jdm block off plate.

haha you dont have to relocate your stereo, the 96-98 cup holders are better than the 99-00. There a little smaller so they hold alot better trust me.

 

I would like to know as well. I get so tired of having to hold the top of my drinks when I take a turn. Honda hasn't gotten this right for awhile as the cupholders in my '93 coupe sucked *** too. They just need to make them deeper. Why can't they do this??

 

the new Civic's are great. I lust over the cupholders (!) in my dad 07 every time I drive it. I think our cupholder were just more of an afterthought rather than an integrated feature.

I wedge my drink next to the parking brake on next to the passenger seat.

most people in japan get drinks from cans unlike the half gallon Super Size cups we get from WacArnolds

 

I removed mine and turned the area into a gauge pod. But there is enough room below them to extend them down a bit. You have to cut the bottoms out tho. We did this to my friends civic and made the cupholders deeper using some fiberglass.

 

what i did is put a rubber cup holder from another car. can't remember though, i think it from an 04 grand am. it fits perfect inside the civic cup holders. it keeps all size drinks in there.

Not to mention "JDM" cans are the equivalent of 6-8 oz. I had relatives comment that our 12 oz soda cans were Godzilla-like

It's not secret that the 6G cupholders aren't supposed to be used while driving. I wouldn't say it's an afterthought so much, but you have to realize most of the 6th gen Civics were sold new for less than $16,000 in 1998. So some of the interior design wasn't looked into as much as maybe it could have been. They still made it safe, reliable and stylish though, which were the main points. A cupholder not working well when you're road racing is a downside, but not that big of one.

I could see Honda putting a deeper cupholder into the Civic, but then the tops of the cups bump against the bottom of the console. This happens on the Acura 1.6EL console. I could see the dash being recesed in a bit to accomidate the cups, but then I think the dash would look funny and honestly that would be a lot of moving around just to make some cups fit in the cupholders.

By the way, in the event that you spill a soda in your car I'd suggest using an Ox-Cleaner style of cleaning product to bring it up. The kind in the spray bottles seem to work best. It will get rid of the stickiness and even the dark cola stain.

From the '97 coupe owner's manual (page 64):

Beverage Holder

To open the beverage holder, push on the op. The beverage holder lid is spring-loaded and will swing open. To close it, push it down until it latches.

Use the beverage holder only when the car is parked. If you place cups in the holder while driving, the liquid may spill when you go over bumps or around corners.

Be careful when you are using the beverage holder. A spilled liquid that is very hot can scald you or your passengers. Spilled liquids can also damage the upholstery, carpeting, and electrical components in the interior.

one other thing i didn't like about the 96-00 civics is how the shifter sits so far from the driver. I love how the shifter is placed on the eg/ej and da/dc's...i really dont want to spend $80+ on a skunk2 dual bend. i'm running the b&m factory bend (some what a dual bend) and hate reaching for the shifter.

If I'm drinking out of a can I use the cup holder. If I'm using a bottle then it goes in the passenger seat or the passengers hand.

 

Ive found the cupholders to work well. a small drink at wendys fits nice. but other than that, like soda bottles go in the passanger seat.whatever my old car didnt have any cup holders. 86 ford escort 3 years ago and im still siked on the honda ones. haha

 

I don't know what you kids are all complaining about .... try a 1.6EL cupholder .... I can't even fit a Taco Bell cup under my audio console.

No such thing as "somewhat of a dual bend" it's either dual or it's not.

And you have trouble reachig the shifter? I'm 5'4 or so and a girl. I have short arms and I don't have trouble reaching it. Then again, I also have short legs so I sit closer. But I dont' lean back in my chair or anything either. If you can reach the pedals by not the shifter you're leaning too far back in your seat.
