Is it illegal to sell a car with a broken speedometer? If I were to sell my car now it would read the same mileage as when I baught it. would the DMV notice?

 

Did you ever report any mileage higher than the current mileage on it to the DMV? If not just say you never drove the car. "I bought it but I'm always using my other car" BS it.

 

Sometimes the DMV can be pretty dumb about ****. But I wouldn't see why it would be illegal.

 

If your car is older then like 9 years then DMV doesn't need to know the mileage

When you sell it, there's probably a form with the title transfer that says mileage is (check the box...) there's probably a box to indicate the odometer is broken.

I brought a '95 accord with 150,000 miles on it but the spedometer read 83,000.

 

while it is not illegal to sell a car with a broken speedo as long as you disclose the facts.

what you are suggesting is illegal and should not be done and if they get wind of it, you can get into some trouble.

sell the car, tell them when the speedo broke and how many miles you honestly think you have put on the car.

 

What ever you do, make sure you sell it AS IS with no warranty and make sure they know this.
