Default Is it illegal to have your car painted similar to a police car's?

Does anyone happen to know the laws about this in California?

Yes, it is illegal. Your car can not resemble a law enforcement vehicle, or you could be charged with impersonating an officer.

i know that your car cannot exactly resemble a police car's.

i was just wondering if the colors can be the same. as in white hood and black doors compared to the black hood and white doors seen on actual police cars.

duh :]

Yeah you can do multiple colors on cars.
But why the hell would you want to be driving around in a big Oreo cookie?

If its just a black/white mismatch, I highly doubt they're going to give you trouble unless you're asking for it (having red/blue strobes, etc).

If you're that concerned about it, you could always call your local Highway Patrol office and ask them directly.

It's not illegal becuase they sell those cars to the public once they are decommissioned. Like previously mentioned, if you attempt to impersonate an officer or bolt up some strobes, you're going to jail.

i dought youd go to jail for bolting up strobes. Cmon now, all the cop would do is be a jackass to you and rip them out of your car.

and to the person who made this thread. Im getting an old crown vic police interceptor with the spot light and brushgaurd grill on the front, throwing heavy tint on this bad boy and putting strobes in the grill, front and back windshields.

Ofcourse blue bulbs arent going to be in the strobes so cops cant say nothing!!!

then again, ill have blue bulbs stashed somewhere when i wana roll up on my friends and mess around with them.

should be a fun ride, hahaha, and damn, those interceptors are fast toooo, chase down the majority of our ricers.

Just don't put any red or blue anywhere. I had red marker bulbs in my 98 Accord and got pulled over 3 times. Then I took them out and got pulled over for speeding and the ****** told me to turn my headlights on, as if he were just trying to find anything and everything to ticket me for. Luckily I had them out.

im pretty sure you can have the same paint scheme, but obviously none of the markings of lights.

you can have the white/block combo, or however your state troopers have them painted like. there is no law saying you cant paint your car a certain way. it just obviously cant say police, sheriff, xHP, etc.

It is not illegal to have your car painted like a police car. I have a friend with a two tone black and white dodge charger and people always move out of the way for him on the highway and in traffic.

I dont even think that having a serien isn't illegal, as long as it isn't hooked up and you never use it. Motorweek did a test of manifacture's poliece cars models and they drove them around for months w/o a single ticket. They were not real poliece cars but they did have big foe badges on the side the said stuff like "Dodge city poliece department, Charger precinct." I would say as long as you dont write police on the side your good but if you deck it like a police car I can't see any thing wrong with it. On seccond though if you did write police no cop would probably give you a hard time. I'm not saying you should do it nor that because motorweek did it's ok but if you act responsibly you should be fine.

I hope your not going to do this to a honda because then you will just look realy stupid.

hey to the guy thats planning on putting strobes in the grill with the crown vic interceptor etc etc (chris61988kb)......sounds fun and all but do NOT light that car up around town, you will be noted by local law enforcement and targeted for anything and everything. Don't believe that neighbours or onlookers won't report you because they will. Ive had friends with simple strobes ticketed with heavy fines. The cops are not stupid you will be made an example of if you act a fool. With that said, if its just for fun its all good. As far as the panda color scheme goes, check out the Jtuned site and look at the project AE86 they built....pretty sick if you ask me.

Dude your from spanaway what do u expect lol, all the cops out there are extremley strict on everything because spanaway is in a grid that is state funded so whatever they can ticket u with is worth their time because they get time and a half. I dont even go over 60 on 512 because if u go 2 over they will write u up.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Spanaway cops aren't NEARLY as bad as Lakewood cops. I was doing 12 over on Bridgeport at 2 in the morning and all of a sudden I see lights from one cop car....not even 5 seconds later, more lights, more lights, more lights. I pull into the 711 parking lot and there are 8 cop cars surrounding my car...no **** either. I was lucky and didn't get a ticket but they said "don't speed through my town again, we know what your car looks like and we will bust your *** next time"...I was like holy ****. I've been lucky I haven't gotten caught on 512. I've hit 130 on an empty night. Too risky though.

i see cop cars that were auctioned off and stripped of lights and decals driving around all the time. Should be the same thing if you painted it??

lights are fine, go on ebay, type in police strobes, in 5 minutes you will see what im saying, you can buy the strobes, and throw them in, just cant use red and blue lights, actualy, you cant use any lights when driving, but if they see blues or reds im sure they will fine you and take them away. Again, thats why you tuck them under the grill, clear lights with little blue bulbs, they will never know unless you pop em on.

then again, i wouldnt do the whole paint scheme and " blow up my whip with the cops"

Id aim for the detect scheme, tinted out crown vic, lights behind the grill, maybe some fake strobes in the back windshield, spot light on drivers side mirror.

and that charger is badass, what are they? the 5.7L hemi r/t? Im driving one of those right now, and lemme tell you, dont try and run from them, they will chase ur honda *** down.... with ease.
