HX rims on 99 ek
hey, i have a small problem that i was hoping you guys could help me out with.
-my friend has a 99 civic lx 4door
-i have a 99 civic 2door ex
he had the hx's on his car and we switched rims. for some reason, the hx's rub like crazy on my front breaks while they were perfectly fine on his.
1 more thing. i dont know if it was how the rim was mounted, but it also wabbles, and when i drive, i get scared and feel as if the wheel is going to break off the axle. any help would be appreciated. thanks a lot
BTW: both cars are completely stock

ex coupe huh...
you need 5mm wheel spacers to run hx wheels on those because the brakes are larger
since and you drove on them that way, youve already messed the wheels or calipers up pretty bad, Im guessing

well i dont know if the tire itself is messed up, but it just wabbles a lot when i drive. not only that, but the freaking lug nuts keep coming loose. thanks for the reply

That's because brake components are rubbing against the inside of the wheel.
If the tires ride fine on his lx, they should be fine on your ex with proper spacers.

We're not talking about TIRES...we're talking about the WHEELS
Do NOT drive the car anymore than you have...youre messing **** up (not that it can get too much worse, Im sure)
Get the 5mm spacers, ghetto-grind the calipers down, or take the wheels off
Those are your options

It's pretty common. Most people that put HX wheels on an EX actually prefer this to spacers since you don't mess with the wheel offset and you don't put extra stress on the lugs.
It's not like you are taking off a huge chunk of your caliper. The part you have to remove is very small. You wouldn't even notice it unless you were really looking for it.
Plus, his wheels have already been grinding against the calipers.

thats true, but i would rather not mess with my calibers for cheap *** oem wheels.

I have HX wheels on my 96 EX and I just bought a set of spacers. I didn't want to grind/shave/whatever on the caliper.
Oh yea. The wheel grinding on the caliper thing. The wheel is aluminum and the caliper bracket is steel. Which do you think is going to take the punishing?

Hey now, grinding down your break caliper will shave weight making it corner better, better 1/4 mile time and better gas mileage. let me know how grinding down your break caliper work out. When you go trow a stop light instead of stopping at in like your supposed to because someone told you to grind down your BREAK CALIPER.

^ What on gods green earth are you talking about?
He might need to shave 3 ounces of material off of his caliper, It wont affect anything.

but the other question: why do the lug nuts keep un-screwing themselves? </TD></TR></TABLE>
Were you not listening/reading to what everyone else was saying/typing???
Do you understand the basics of how a tire/rim mounts onto a vehicle???
When you mount the rim/tire onto your car, the HUB needs to sit flush against the rotor in order for the lugs to tighten properly.
If the rim is rubbing against the brake caliper, then it should be pretty obvious the hub won't sit flush against the rotor and the lugs WON'T TIGHTEN PROPERLY.
You have 3 options as other members have stated.
1) use a 5mm wheel spacer so that everything clears.
2) shave part of the caliper until the rims clears
3) swap rims again.
It's pretty expletive amazing you haven't killed yourself in an a car crash yet...

Clarifying - The flat hub of the wheel will sit securely against the rotor HAT. I'm sure that is what you meant, but I thought I would state that for safety's sake.

Thanks for the clarification... I guess to add to it...
Here is what a 5mm spacer looks like...

Here's what the HUB (backside of the rim) would look like

The hub or hub and spacer would all need to sit flush against the hat of the rotor like in the picture above.

Here's a couple pics grabbed from a google search...
HX rims with 9.5" brakes like OP's friend's LX

HX rims on 10.3" brakes like OP's EX brakes

Nice job, Chim Chim. I still can't get past the point that someone would put a unknown wheel on another car and NOT spin the thing once mounted. I mean it must have been difficult to put onto the bolts with some notable binding.
