I have a 98 accord with 165k (original owner) 4-cyl. I had my ignition switch replaced via recall 5 years ago. I think the problem has come back. While driving down the road at about 40 mph the check engine light came on and lights went off on dash for just a second and then everything went back to normal. Also, sometimes when starting engine the car won't start. If I keep trying to start car it will start. Very hard to reproduce. I went to a local Honda dealership and a service advisor sat in my car and jiggled the key while running and he believes the switch could be faulty. Has anybody else seen or heared this? All responses appreciated.
Re: 98 accord ignition switch problem again!!! (Elvis1977)
Well I've replaced quite a few of them;
the switches were junk the first time around and the units installed during the recall were the same unit as had already failed. No upgrade to really 'FIX' the problem.
Honda needs to wake up and realize, they can gold plate it and polish it, but a turd is still a turd.
Re: 98 accord ignition switch problem again!!! (hondadude)
When they did the cylinder on my '98 they didn't even try to claim it was for that reason. Dealer said the recall was for a sloppy reinforcement barrel around the lock cylinder. Unrelated to the electrical part of the switch.
Apparently the recall (mine, at least) was related to a 'law' saying you shall not be able to remove the key while the engine's running. They must think it's OK for cars to stall for no reason...
I drive a 98 civic and recently have been having the notorious ignition switch problem (stalling while driving and lights on dash going out on start up so no start). I took the switch apart and cleaned the contact plates which are worn down a decent amount. While apart I stretched each spring a little to give them more rebound against the contact plates. It helped the wiggling of key stall problem out so far. The whole switch contraption is a crap design but definitely better than it was. Hoorfully thus will help someone else with this BS switch headache.
