short ram or cold air intake?
what's better for my new civic lx?
i have a friend keeps on warning me about "if it rains it'll flood into your cold-air intake and screw up your engine, so short ram will be the safe bet."
but then again a lot of people DO install cold air intake.
is it that dangerous/safe?
will performance be different in the two? they're both forcing air into your engine.

Your friend is dumb.
A simple rain won't cause your car to hydro-lock. You need to get a LOT of water in their, so going through a deep puddle and then flooring it is really what's gonna do it. So far is seems like everyone is getting a CAI on their cars and I've yet to see an "OMFG I HYRDOLOCKED MY CAR!!" thread, so I'm assuming they're good.
Get a hyroshield with it and you're set.

I was the same way. About 3 weeks ago my friend and i installed my Injen CAI. I tell you this.... After installing that damn thing my thoughts was that i will never get one again. It was a pain to install. Well for me at least. It all paid off at the end. I had a 99 DX civic with a AEM SRI and now i have a 06 Si. So if im going to mod my car ima go all or nothing. So i did and i tell you this i am so damn happy i got a CAI! Its amazing! I cant not hit Vtec or what not. And at times i set off car alarms. No joke. My Vtec is so damn loud. I love this car. I will never go back to a SRI!!! Injen CAI all the way!
1) you already have CAI, every car built in the last 20 years has one. Simply taking input air from a place that is not behind the radiator is all you need. It does NOT need to be low to function. In fact the longer you make it over stock, the larger diameter it must be to compensate for the restricted flow created by the longer distance. Never, ever use a CAI that is smaller diameter than the stock CAI. Bends make them worse.
2) ditto on the 1st answer re: hydrolock. You need A LOT of water for this to happen. But some homebrew and even aftermarket CAIs can create this problem if the inlet is mounted really low like at the bottom of the bumper. But we're talking about a SOLID SLUG of water filling the tube, not some mist, kick up or road spray. Those won't hurt a thing and will be caught by your air filter.
3) Ram air is a joke. It only "works" at high speed, as the forward motion of the car is all that's providing any Ram effect, and unless the tube is incredibly short (like <1'), to say nothing of wide, the effect is lost in the pipe's resistance (static pressure). Any bends or turns likewise can negate the effect. It worked in old large block engines that could push the air directly down into the carburator.
I tend to agree: your "friend" is an idiot. But the world is full of them....

He's right. Short ram is the "safe" bet.
But I'd certainly argue not the BETTER bet.

Not exactly... you've definatly gotta be traversing some fairly deep water but hydrolock happens more often and easily than a lot of people think.

ive herd CAI are better power wise but its only a few hp... ive always liked the deeper sound you get with a short intake. i havent herd either one on the new si or an lx... so what help am i
get whatever u want, your friend is paranoid. unless ur being stupid you won't hydrolock.
and as far as one being better then the other. cai vs sri.. i HIGHLY doubt there is any real world diff in power. cai usually does better on the dyno because theres not alot of air moving through the engine bay as there would be while driving. heat soak is a myth in my opionion unless ur sitting in rush hour traffic. once u get up to speed the air in your engine bay is quickly flushed out with new air all the time so either one is going to perform about the same in the real world. only short rams are a little louder and have better throttle response. to each his own. do w/e u want. its not like you're going to feel the hp diff of 1-2 hp lol.

honestly i had both a short ram and a cold air on my 07 si and the only difference i could really tell was the noise and i decided to stick with the short ram cuz the air is a lil thicker in new england. but let me tell you i love how the short ram feels and sounds it really pulls hard in the higher gears.
personally its all on what you like and what you wanna do
