Need Help CODE P0011
stockLS,
Did you ever get this fixed? If so, what was the issue.
Our 2003 CRV is giving the same code. I have no reason to suspect the screen is plugged. I guess I can check the solenoids for contnuity.
I did change the oil and reset the PCM codes, but it came back.
Thanks,

You must visually check the screen and checking a solenoid for continuity is not a good test, just because the coil has near zero resistance does not mean it isnt internally partially shorted and it cant carry enough Amps to pull the solenoid open. It can be removed and bench tested though or an Oscilloscope and Amp Clamp can be used to do a non-intrusive ramp test and the pintle movement can be seen on the Amp Ramp but this does not mean that the passageway isnt plugged up with sludge, so a bench test is the best way to go.
There are other issues other than oil control issues but it is a good place to start. Is the solenoid getting power or ground to make it operate when commanded on. Is the computer giving it a command at all.

Got a vehicle with the MIL on and DTC P0011 (VTC system malfunction)? Is the engine also idling roughly
or misfiring? The VTC oil control solenoid valve may just be the culprit. This DTC usually sets when there’s
debris clogging the valve. Once the debris clears, the valve works fine and no longer sets this DTC.
Before you start any troubleshooting, first make sure of these things:
• The engine oil level reads full.
• There’s a Honda Genuine oil filter installed.
• The low oil pressure indicator is working right.
Then use the HDS to clear DTC P0011, and retest. If the DTC doesn’t come back, debris was probably
clogging the valve and now it’s cleared; the vehicle is OK at this time and you’re good to go. But if you wind
up again with this DTC . . . then do the troubleshooting procedure on pages 11-127 and 11-128 of the
’02–04 CR-V S/M. (Online, enter keyword P0011 and select DTC P0011: VTC System Malfunction from
the list.)
Trouble Found (NTF). So don’t replace the valve unless the DTC comes back.

Duane and Cory_Man,
Thanks for your replies.
I took it to a shop in the hometown that specializes in Honda and Acuras.
They pulled and cleaned the screen, said they did not find anything and bench tested the solinoid and said it was good. I did ask them about just placing 12v on it and they discussed with me the fact that it took a variable voltage from the PCM to work it correctly, so they seemed to know what they were talking about. They benched tested it with a variable input.
The car seemed to run better for a day or so, then missed a bit and cut off once on my wife.
We ran it like that for about a week without the check engine light coming on, but it came back on with me driving yesterday. I guess I drive it a bit harder than my wife and I put it in a condition where it was calling for more advance and was not getting it.
I plan to pull the valve myself and look at it if the new code is the same P0011 as before. Will get it checked tomorrow.
It sounds like the predominant root cause for this is oil pluggage and not a mechanical failure of the device on the cam.....
Any chance a timing chain that was worn for some reason would do this?
Manual calls for it to be taken to the dealer for the computer to be reflashed.
If that does not do it, then it calls for the cam to be looked at. Seems rather unlikely to be the culprit.

Have the code rescanned to verify that another issue hasnt come up. Ive seen IACV issues on those Crv's cause no start concerns as well. There are several screens for the VTC system, both need to be checked. The actual VTC solenoid has several screens and there is another larger screen on the front of the cyl head near the intake manifold. Both can get clogged. I have only seen these clogged when customers dont change their oil on a regular schedule. Be very careful since the K series are a bit temperamental with oil condition and regular oil changes. Ive done quite a few timing chain, tchain guides and tensioners on everything from Accords to Civic Si's and ALL of them were caused by lack of regular oil changes. hth
Cory,
Thanks.
I did have it rescanned and it came up P0011 again.
Funny thing is it cleared before I got to the shop to have it checked. It was in memory and memory had been cleared earlier so it was valid.
Funny thing is when the solenoid was pulled and checked the last time and they could find nothing wrong, the car seemed to run better for a few days, but then got a little worse over a few days. Once it surged as I was leaving the neighborhood going about 30 mph. Not much but a short surge and return enough for the driveer to be aware and a passenger to feel if they were looking for it.
And I swear, after the code cleared yesterday on its own, the car seemed to run a bit smoother then also.
Could be my imagination.
What is not my imagination, is that this code is associated with the less than smooth acceleration and constant speed throttle.
I'm going to watch it more before I do anything to it, but my next move will be to pull the valve myself and inspect it.
The larger screen was checked at the shop first and the solenoid was also checked.
I'm beginnning to think the soleniod needs to be changed, that it might have a spot or two where it wants to hang, and it just didn't show up on the bench test for whatever reason.
Condition of the oil should not be a problem. I might have let it go 5K miles once or twice, but that in and ofitself should not do it.
