Recently my a/c only gets cold while I'm accelerating. At a stop signs it gets warm pretty quick. The car is a 96' Accrod EX-V6. Does anyone know what the problem is? Does it need more freon?

When was the last time you had it recharged? Is the AC fan kicking in?

 

I have never recharged the a/c system and how would I check to see if the a/c fan is kicking on? Thanks for the speedy reply!

Turn your a/c on and open your hood up. You will see and here the a/c fan run.

 

I checked the fans and they are turning on when I hit the A/C button. Anythoughts?

system low on charge

 

Someone on another forum asked me to check the a/c fan clutch. How would I go about doing that and how would I check to see if the charge is low?

if it's low then you have a leak. Look into that first....

 

i wouldn't jump right to a leak, since he said he has never recahrged it, and its a 96...eventulay you have to recharge it no matter what. i would look into the recharging idea

 

sorry to jack, but how much would it cost to do a recharge? and where would you get one?

Freon does not evaporate or dissapte in any way shape or forum. if you have a completely sealed AC system then it will last forever. However a leak will always develop. Some leaks are so minute that it would take around 5 years to completely empty the system,while others will do it much quicker.

 

So how do I go about looking for the leak?

Well you can take it to a shop or do it your-self. You need AC dye and an ultra violet light. Inject the dye into the low side then cycle the system for a day or two. Use the light to find the leak afterwards. Sometimes it is almost impossible to find in which case you will need a "sniffer" This is a tool that detects freon an emits a beeping sound when the source of the leak is located.When used together these methods are guaranteed to fing the leak.
