Any way to fix faded paint?
i just got a hood for cheap, 50 bucks, but the paint is faded in some spots. can i fix it, or make it less noticable without getting it repainted. tried wax already
got not choice to repaint or spot paint it will look noticeable and ugly, sand the entire hood, primer it then prep it for paint, probably be ur best option, but you can use a spray can if you want a decent job.
you should use POLISH instead of wax. I've made some real faded paint look pretty close to new with just turtlewax polish and a lot of rubbing.
There's several levels of polish too depending on how bad your fade is. The stuff in the can is pretty course (if you use turtle wax, they have a fine and a course polishing compand), and then to fish up you can use the Scratch-and-swirl remover (i think it's called something like that).
Start by just trying it in small area first. When you're done, remember to wax.

eh, haha, too late. already started sanding it. should i be using a block or an electric sander. there are more layers of paint/primer on there than i thought there was. whats the best way to bust through it quick.
d'oh.
you dont need to get rid of it all, just sand it down to make the surface rough so that the new paint can stick to it. if you really want to though, you can use paint stripper.

as long as its smooth and porous enough for the primer to bond or adhere to, but sand it down smoothly, hope you wet sanded it, makes it easier IMO, and clean the hood dry no dust, etc. Then you can primer it.
Try a rubbing compoud first from your local auto parts store. It takes a small layer off of the clear coat. Does wonders to oxidized paint. Then finish off the job with some wax. Then put a coat of polish on.

well im broke so im not getting anything painted from a shop. i got paint stripper spray stuff thats sitting on there right now and this plastic handled stripped thing to use to get the paint off after its been peeled away by the stripper spray. im just hoping it takes off the primer too. i saw it bubbling a little already it was pretty cool
how many coats should i put down for the primer. i got filler primer, its gray. i already have the first coat sitting out there drying now. doesnt look too even but whatever.
I can't believe how many people are posting replies which show that they didn't bother reading any of the previous posts (where he said he already started sanding).

An abrasive polish would have definitely been worth a try, and could have avoided the need to paint. Oh well, too late.

Now that youve sanded down to the metal, your hood will need to be primed before paint. You still dont need to sand all of the paint off, just enough that there wont be any edges and it'll be smooth. Once its smooth, If your doing it on the cheap, go to a carquest or automotive supply store that has autobody stuff and talk to them. They can mix any material in a can for you. Have them mix you a primer and get the color off your door jam for the finish coat. They'll most likely mix a one step single stage acrylic for you thats pretty easy to use. Just ask lots of questions!!! Spray the hood with several light coats of primer letting tack up between coats. Over lap the coats but dont let it get too thick. Try to use sweeping strokes and dont over do it. Give the primered surface a sand with 320 or so just to roughen it up again, before you spray. I'd spray 4 coats of your top coat on the hood, with nice overlapping strokes. Make sure there isnt any dust on the floor of your garage that will be guarenteed to find its way into the paint. When you spray the final coat, spray it as a mist coat, and dont touch it after that. Make it a nice light EVEN coat, and walk away. Give it over nigth to dry and if you missed any areas, respray the whole hood with one final coat. give it 12 hours to dry. Almost for sure with a spray can you'll have wicked orange peel, so you'll want to color sand. Pick up 1000 1500 and 2000 grit sand papers and some cheaypo turtle wax rubbing and polishing compounds. Wet sand the hood (keep the paint wet with water) with the 1000, then 1500 then 2000. Wipe the hood down and check for smootheness. If the paint is flat, and looks decent, then buff with the compound first, then the polish, then finish with the wax you'll want to use an orbital buffer, trust me on this!! most places have the simonzie ones for 35 bucks or so.........A lot of guys say to wait a week before wax, but I never have, and havent had any issues. Go to http://www.autobody101.com and read read read. Good luck..... thats the best I could do without having anything in front of me. It might take you a few times to get it right, but you will learn a TON by doing it yourself.
wow, that was awesome thank you so much. well this is where i am now:
sanded/paint stripped.
primer stripped down to metal
cleansed it with an alcohol based solvent
sanded LIGHTLY with 120 grit (all i had)
3 coats of filler primer(gray)
sanded with 800 grit sand paper
sprayed 2 coats of black on there so far
the paint looks kind of blotchy and uneven but im gonna coat it one more time then wait 48 hours and try to blend it together a little bit. how does all that sound?
