Default 03 Accord EXL 4cyl = Horrible gas mileage < 18 mpg

I just bought an 03 accord exl, it looks great but the gas mileage on it sucks *****.. It has about 81,000 miles

I just filled and topped it off w/ about 12 gallons and was only on around 230 miles. Verry poor in my opinion.. my 07 camry gets about 350 city driving where as this accord may get about 260 tops before the needle gets to "E".

I just changed the NGK platnium spark plugs which look to be the originals w/ some bosch platniums since the auto store didn't have any NGK's in stock..
I hope the new plugs will help w/ gas mileage as its worse than a 6 cylnder right now..

the previous owners also mentioned that the 02 was recently changed and the car isn't throwing any CEL's either.. The air filter was also checked and seems to be brand new as well..

So what else could be causing this crappy gas mileage??

it seems like it would almost have to be the 02 sensor, they could have touched it and ruined the sensor

I forget which plugs are ideal for accords but as far as I know the platinums aren't them. I've also heard from people in this forum that you should never top off the tank. Wouldn't hurt to try that once and see if it improves anything.

The NGK OE Laser Iridiums - IZFR6K11 are the recommended plugs for the 2003 Accord L4.

Some things not right here. you said that you filled the tank up with 12gal. of fuel. You should have been able to put ALOT more in there. The car have a 17.1 gal. fuel tank. Even if you drove with the gas light on for a little bit you should still be able to put just over 15gal's in. Also how are you cal. that milage. The correct way is to fill up the tank, before you even start the car set one of your tipometers to zero, drive till you need gas again. Then when you fill up the tank take the number of gallens and divide that into the milage that you have recorded. You will want to do this for atleast one more time. Then average them together. This will be the best way to figure you milage out.

That's really bad, driving to and from work with a turbo sucking in 11.1 AFR at max boost and I still get 24+mpg with mostly traffic highway conditions. I always pull at least 300 miles out of 13 gallons. And my MPG isn't that much worse now than when it was pre-turbo, because I don't run around maxing out every gear, which took about a month to get over. Sometimes it can be something weird, but try two more tanks, and if its the same problem then you should look for a solution, but don't go to a dealer cause they're retarded.
