Default General Exhaust Question

First off...

Car - 96 Honda Civic CX HB
Exhaust - 4-2-1 Header into an OEM SI cat following a Tanabe Racing Medallion Exhaust
Motor - SOHC Mini Me (stock internals)

Now...to the question.

This month my car was do for an inspection. Doing an oil change this weekend I noticed a small hole in what I want to call the "resonator" of the Tanabe exhaust.

I made an appointment at the local muffler shop. (where I know the one guy)

(Keep in mind. I loved the way my exhaust sounded. It was to me perfect through all RPMs. I even run w/ the silencer due to the muffler getting somewhat blowout)

I was hoping he would be able to fill it in w/ some weld but it was getting to be to far gone. He said he could remove it and replace it w/ straight pipe. Needing an inspection I told him to go for it.

Well, it's done, and as soon as I drove of I noticed a some what "raspy/ricy" now.

I can't stand it. It's driving me nuts. I figured having an OEM cat and a muffler the sound wouldn't change much. But that resonator must really have helped keep the tone solid through all the RPMs.

If I had them replace it w/ a cheap "glass pack" or something...would that fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Jeremy

Well...I was hoping it going through an OEM Si cat, through a glass pack, then through a tanabe muffler would remove the slight raspness.

I'd rather not pay for shipping if I don't have to. I also don't want to go to the shop, and have them remove what the put on and replace it w/ a glass pack and it still not fix the problem.

sound like your in a dilema. you could always put the stock header back on for inspection. then worry about finding a new resonator. you dont have any local shops in the area that could have one?

Yes you can use a long (24 inches +) to mellow out the tone the longer it is the more mellow the tone.

No.

I have a header...going into an SI cat I fabricated myself for inspection/environment purposes.

The resonator in the Tanabe exhaust went bad. It has a hole. It was removed and replaced w/ straight pipe.

I need to replace the straight pipe w/ something to get it back to the original sound.

A long what? Glass pack?

I called Advanced Auto and they have a 25" glass pack for $28.xx. I'd just have to see if I have enough room for something that long.

Aye.

Called the shop and talked to the guy I know. He said there isn't any room for a glass pack. The piece he cut out was about 18".

He said the only way to get the original sound back in is to buy a resonator (which they don't carry) and put it in it's place of the straight pipe.

Yea...it's starting to look that way. I'll call some other local shops and see if there is anything around.

I am going to stop by the shop and pick up my old resonator that he said he still has. Maybe I can patch it up myself and make it work.

That's the plan. I'm going to have my buddy look over it...and see if he thinks he can "fix it"

look into magnaflow resonators, they sell those things in all the muffler shops i have been in, some of them sell them as actual mufflers. Look them up. Heck, here goes, you should be able to find a cheaper place. good luck.

Thanks.

I'd like to see the actually product before buying it. Unless the overall length is 18" or less.

But I'll look into them...but hoping I can get my buddy to fix mine. He claims he is a great welder..and it's what he does 10 hours a day. haha

Any other help or advice would be appreciated.

check out summitracing.com

they make some dynomax "mufflers" which are basically resonators that should fit in the spot you're looking for.

They do...but their site seems to be hard to navigate for that product. They have hundreds...and you can't filter by length.

I'm going to try to fix the OEM one for now...or atleast pick it up and have my bud look at it today.

Simi update.

After 10+ calls to different parts shops/exhaust shops I found one that had a resonator on stock. I picked up my old one, and jammed down to look at the one the guy had on stock. It's 18", and 4" round. Hopefully it won't be to round...but it's not under the linkage or anything so I should be fine. (hopefully)

The dude only took cash, and he wanted $30.00. To my surprise I only had 20 so I had to run to the mac machine.

Back to my local tire shop. I show the guy what I have and made an appointment to get it on after work. He says... "We could have ordered that."

I got simi pissed and told him this is what I was after the whole time and he said he didn't deal with them.

Either way...they are going to put it on today in place of the straight pipe...and I hope it sounds better.

The guy said it might make it a bit quieter then it is now...but hopefully if I take out the Tanabe silencer it will still have a deep tone.
