Default d15b2 starts and drives short distance then dies

I have a 1990 crx d15b2 whoever had it before me hacked on it. The fuel pump, that i was told is new, is on a toggle switch, I know the fuel filter is good I found new box with old filter in the car. Most of the gauges dont work and a 5in tach has been added. The car starts fine but about 1/4 mile down the road the car looses power and dies. I had my brother go with me down the road, when it died we pulled over i popped the hood and used a screwdriver to see if we had spark, and we did. Could the distributor be heating up but in the time it takes to pull over and pop the hood be cooling off enough to work and start? Any help would be appreciated.

it sounds like a main relay/fuelpump issue. trace all the wires that the previous owner added for the switch, is it a killswitch or is it a main relay bypass hackjob?

yeah....the problem with running just a switch for the fuel pump without a relay or fuse is, that the switches tend to wear out quite quickly...but if that was the case the car wont go at all...

seeing how you said the car is a total hackjob, im assuming theres more to the picture than your telling us....it would be hard for us to give you accurate suggestions without more info

The car itself is not a hackjob. It was my car, I sold it, it got a header lowered and intake. That guy sold it and the next guy put on a cat-back exhaust, fuel filter. He swears he put in a fuel pump (walbro 255) which is on a switch. It has a tach that works but when he put it in the gauge pod backlight didn't work. The second switch operates the light on the tach. The day I bought the car back the battery was dead we jumped it off but it would not rev above 3500rpm. I have since added a new alternator and charged the battery and have not had that problem again. Main relay will be my first plan of attack. How do i check it? Thanks

Ok I looked at the main relay and fixed weak factory joints. I went down the road, same problem. I used starting fluid and it started. My nest step will be to drop the fuel tank and look at the fuel pump screen and see if its really new.
