Default Accelerator slipping, transmission problem?

Hi,

My friend's civic recently had a problem with his acceleration. Basically when he hits the gas it doesn't do anything in "D". He somehow finally got it to go after shifting from park to drive a couple of times. From what it sounds like it sounds like the gears aren't catching or something like that.

He took it to a mechanic and they said it would cost about $1700 Canadian..(is that maybe $1500USD ?) to replace the transmission.

Is this something that could be fixed? Would it be safe to try and ask someone to rebuild? I believe it is an 2000 Civic. I can't remember if it was an Si, LX, or anything like that but i know its a sedan and its automatic.

Thank you for any help!

okay so it cant be an si cause thouse come in coupes. you can find a much cheeper tranny if you shop around. most shops are just trying to screw you over. look at these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWDVW
then just pay a shop to put it in. or if you know how you can save alot of money putting it in yourself.

The only reasons it should do that are as follows.
A) a bad electrical connection at the shifter solenoids on the tranny
B) Bad shifter solenoids
C) bad torque converter

Since he did get it to work, it doesn't sound like the torque converter. If it were that, even when it would drive, it would probably slip and be ugly.
I hate dealing with autos, so I never troubleshoot them. I'd just grab a manual and sit down with the troubleshooting section and see where you get. But it definitely sounds like an issue with the shift solenoids. Probably something you could find at a junkyard and replace yourself.
