Default Question about re-clear coating machined lips

i have a set of wheels (for my Grand) that currently have a machined face and lip but the clear coat all over is shot. I'm going to strip them and refinish them in gloss black and leave the lip machined. My question, will I be able to clear right over the machined lip and have it not flake or did the original manufacturer do something to promote adhesion to the metal?

I'm also interested. I've never refinished machined lips.

Bump.

Yes you can clear right over the lip. All you need to do is scuff it just like you were spraying base. Here are my wheels black base with matte clear. I ended up sanding off the clear on the lips to polish them but i had clear on them for a month or two.....

Where I sprayed color I used a red 3M scuff pad, on the lip a grey 3M scuff pad
