Just like the topic states, Im looking to buy a new bike in the next month. I recently had a chance to ride my buddy's Ducati 750SS and loved it, so im looking to get something around the 750cc range. Anyone have any good or bad experiences buying there bike? How much did you get yours for and where did you get it? Thanks in advance.

How about anyone who has purchased a GSX-R? Trying to justify not putting a down on a new car and keeping my payments low with a bike around 10k since my DD is paid off. Was thinking about a GSX-R 750 (05-06) or maybe even a 749 Duc (black... saw one around 11k).

Brand new bike as your first bike... why this topic again? Make it stop.

A Ducati 750SS and a GSXR750 are worlds apart. Heck, even a 600 supersport can whoop on a 750SS (given equal riders).
I believe OTDcyclesports.com has the best prices. I don't recall if they are a Suzy dealer though.

I know I know, flame all you want. Everyone says you will lay your first bike down, but to be honest I dont really care. An 05-06 GSX-R would suit me just fine or even an older Ducati (around 00) like my buddy's would be nice.

There are a lot of resources already available to you - you could start with possibly the very first thread sticky'd to the top of the forum? Or perhaps your local DMV learning whats required to get a M cert on your license?
I'm certainly willing to help out ANY new rider, but think about how often people come in here with "zomg I rode my friends bike around the block and now I want to go get a brand new gixxArrr!!11!" ? It happens a lot in the spring time....

Indeed, do not confuse twin layout power delivery with four cylinder delivery... best get a little more experience first. Either riding others bikes or with a junker... trust us, you be thankful

And I understand that... I already have the test booklet from the DMV along with a schedule for the CHP riding course that I plan on taking within the next 2-3 weeks after i take my permit test. I see where you are coming from, but im 26 and not some punk kid that thinks he is just going to hop on a bike and have at it. I have respect for the bike. This is something i have been thinking about for years now and finally had the motivation/means to get a bike.

Everyone says that...... nice frame of mind to have, but most modern sport bikes are ridiculously fast. Even a $4000 5 year old F4i will run 10's, and wheelie high enough to spit you off the back of it if you get greedy.
You'll be a better rider in the end if you start on something slower than the latest supersport yamhonzuki. But hey, its your $$.
I dont expect to change your mind though... its the same topic... over, and over, and over.

I know, you guys get the same ******* question over and over by the same douche lil kid and it ruins it for everyone else that has a truly honest question and has weighed out all of his options and talked to everyone they can think of that owns a bike. I hear it all from my parents/friends and am even reminded of what can happen on a bike if you think you are in control when I saw a guy tossed 70 ft from his Harley when a Lexus pulled out in front on him. Im not trying to buy a bike to look cool or go fast. I have always been fascinated with bikes and have always dreamed of owning one. As much as I like the new 07 bikes I would easily settle for a 00-05 bike and save my money. I just think its bullshit that I come on here, ask a question and get the same lecture i expected i would from the same type of people. Everyone starts somewhere
if, as you say, you are fascinated with bikes do not want to look cool or go fast, then why not consider a slower, older (hence cheaper to buy and insure) bike?
mid-90s 600s may not be that fast by todays standards but they are still plenty quick. and by buying older, you should be able to afford some nice gear

I was even looking at 00 Ducs like the one i rode, which my buddy picked up for a good price. I have a good amount of money saved up and have 2 sources for gear at cost or 10% over so its all about finding a bike with good mileage now.

I have no idea why everyone thinks 2000 is old.....sure there have been some advances since 2000, but not enough to consider them old and slow.
My advice, look for a monster 620 since you are already used to duc twins.

you should look at the kbb values online for bikes you are looking for so when you go to the dealer you know what youre supposed to be paying. alot of the bike dealerships rip people off big time.
you can also check out the oc cycle trader for deals.

They dont call them the "stealership" for nothing. I have been checking the trader every thursday to see what is out there yet, but I still have about a month to do some more research before I purchase. Thanks for the help

Very true, just need to put as much effort searching for a bike as i did searching for a car. Found a few 00 Ducs so far, but most of them are in the 20k+ range on mileage.

Don't be discouraged by .RJ and some of the others, they just see too much BS pass through this forum. If you want to make a good start here on HT and with bikes in general, just sit back and read as much as you can. Prepare to get flamed a little and to make mistakes. Stick it out long enough and the payoff will be way worth it. Good luck
