Default Tranny Issues

I have recently noticed that when in higher rpms (5500 and up) shifting from 2nd to 3rd comes with a short grinding. I am hoping it is simply the synchros.

I have read that this is a common problem, but what is the fix for this?

I drive a 00 SI

If it were synchro's, youd prob experience it popping out of gear when you arent on the gas.

Cold be your clutch setup. You may have airbubbles in your Master\slave cylindar line. This would mean theres low pressure, and its not disengaging the clutch all the way when you press down the clutch pedal. This can be solved simply by adding fluid, and bleeding the line for about 5-10 minutes.

It could also be your pressure plate. If your splines are worn out, when your pressing the clutch down, its not disengaging the clutch all the way.

^^.

When was the last time you changed your clutch or fluids?

I would start by seeing if there is air in the lines and changing the tranny fluid with a magnetic drain plug.

when u find out let me know lol... im on my 3rd tranny now, and they all start going bad by the "infamous 3rd gear grind"... Im sure there just old or something cuz i dont rag on them, occasional redline here and there but definitely dont beat on mine, an they always start going bad by one of the gear transitions having a grind in it... I went to autozone and they sell Manual Transmission Fluid called "Synchromesh" that seemed to work fine for a little while but I guess my problems are always bigger than that, because im about to be looking for another tranny.. I have 2 D16Z6 trannys in my garage that both wont go in gear... If i knew how to fix'm id be all over it but i guess as long as they keep breaking im gonna keep collecting... Ill learn to fix'm one day

^^, it' not the infamous bad tranny. You could have a number of problems.

I bet with all 3 of those tranny's you never replaced your clutch fluid, lines, or slave cylinder.

you can try a syncromesh like the penzoil or GM they are both very similiar but in the future your syncronizer rings will need to be replaced

GM's synchromesh "friction modified" is a penzoil product.

Well I changed the fluid and bled the whole system. The grind is still there.

I am guessing I need to take it to a mechanic and have them look the tranny over.

Should I have them just replace the Syncro for the 3rd gear?

If you do the rutene checks just get a new tranny and rebuilt the one with bad gears with better ratios

you could replace the synchrso yourself, just get a helms.

A shop will charge you $500+ for that.

I would do it myself, but I only have limited tools and a limited space to work on the car.

What exact tolls will I need?

I was told that it would cost about 300 for a brand new sycnro for third gear. Also I was told that the 'Transition?" from 3rd to 4th would need to be replaced...

Does this sound about right?
