Default Equivalent of 250cc Ninja?

What cycles are equivalent to the 250cc Ninja? I am a starting rider and don't want to start with a big 600/750. I'm having some trouble finding 250 Ninjas in my area, and would like to start exploring some Yamaha's/Suzuki's. What 250cc bikes do they offer?

Yamaha made a 250 but not sure of the exact letter designation.. and if you can get one.... all the major manufacturrers make them, just not imported into the US.

I'd love to have a 400cc biek from japan... but they dont pass all the crappy laws..
