Sanding molding on bumper

I have a used JDM front bumper and the molding on it is kinda scuff, i was wonder what grit of sandpaper i should use on it, would it be the same to scuff the paint on the bumper too?

Post up some pics. I have used 400 &600 to smooth out some of my bumpers with scuff marks.
